calling all boat mechanics....

so i know its not xj related, but i was hoping one of my midwest neighbors could help. i have been working on my buddies boat and we finally got out to take it on the lake today. i have been telling him for months that he has blowby and finally proved it to him today. the boat has been running okay for about 30 minutes, then it will suddenly die and won't restart for about 30 min. i pulled the valve cover vent and we pushed it into a bottle we had in the boat once we got it started...it wasn't the best solution but it was all we had. the blowby was pretty intense and you could see the oil vapor just shooting into the bottle. the good news it suddenly the boat ran like a champ and would get up on plane in a few seconds rather than not at all like before.

so the boat is an omc cobra 2.3 inboard/outboard...i believe its around 1 1990 and it is carbureted. i looked for the pcv valve, but it seems to be missing? is it possible that it is in the crank case some where or the oil pump instead of inline? if there is one it doesn't appear to be doing anything so i'm wondering if there is one that i could buy that would be in line...

any thoughts, ideas? anyone here work on boats at all or ford 2.3L motors? my next solution would be to build a catch can, but it really looks to me that the pcv valve is not working at all and i would rather replace that and go from there

I tried to ask my brother what he thought, since he is a boat mechanic and a damn good one. But from your description here he is unclear on the whole situation. He was willing to check it out in person until I told him you were from IOWA haha. I tried anywho.

thanks dude...basically the oil blowby is stalling the motor. when we disconnected the vent tube on the valve cover from the carb and put it into a "catch can" the motor ran better...way better...i'm thinking the oil blowby is being caused because someone removed the pcv valve. from everything i have read, the valve is supposed to be inline on the crank case vent tube that runs from the crank case to the carb and there is not one there. i've never dealt with blowby, so i'm a little at a loss here. from my understanding if your motor is starting to go south you will get some blowby, however if your pcv valve is broken or missing you will have major blowby. i would say this is pretty major with the amount of oil i saw. i just know very little about this motor

^ This appears to be the problem right here.

I think it's by the distributor. Part of a hose between the intake and crankcase breather.

I prefer to bleed Mercury Black , sometimes you don't have a choice and just want to go boating though.

lol...yeah im a big merc fan, but its not my boat lol...i think i actually may have been looking on the wrong side for the pcv valve. i'm going to take a peek again tomorrow.
