Buncha new stuff going in

I finally got around to having the D44 I bought a while back installed - no driveway plus the new job eating up my time meant handing it over to have the work done, so stuff sat for longer than planned while I got the cash together for the work. Had 4.10 gears, ECTEDs at both ends, and a Teraflex rear disc conversion done at the same time; it's all shaping up pretty nicely. Sorry for the crappy cameraphone pictures, but they mostly get the idea across:

I'm pretty sure this axle wasn't an option in 2000. Note the relocated shock mounts :)

Here's the driver's side - you can see how the handbrake does its thing.

Mmmm, ECTED goodness.

The D30's ECTED. The camera may suck, but I like the electroluminescent effect it gave the RTV. Now I just need the subwoofer to go with it.

Won't have the XJ back in time for the weekend (parts delays), but am really looking forward to playing with the new stuff once it's in my hands again.

Oh, and the one thing in all of this that didn't happen: retaining the ABS for on-road use. I couldn't find tone rings before the Jeep had to go into the shop, so I just had them tie the sensors up out of the way and pull the relay. I've got another set of shafts, so figure I'll just get the rings onto them and swap out whenever I feel like it. I kinda suspect that with the discs, though, the ABS won't be 100% necessary ;)

Hehe, thanks :) Next round of upgrades are extended shackles at the rear and ACOS up front, and figuring out if I reeeeeally want to deal with replacing the LP30 with an HP30. Kinda suspect I'll need to with the ACOS in there, but I'll try to dodge that bullet for as long as I possibly can.

Now I can hopefully get out and go wheeling again... My timecards for the past few weeks are averaging 56 hours; God knows I need the break.

looks good i wish i could afford the disc brake conv, i just put a non disco 30 w/297s in my mj today and tommorow im putting in the 44

Looks awesome!

I'm glad its getting put to use rather than just sitting in my garage.
When I come out that way in the summer of '09 (long wheelin' roadtrip), we'll have to head out on the trails!

Summer of 09?? Thats looking aheadddd

Looks good man! I just rebuilt mine and moved the shocks in the same place.

Who has the best deal on the Tera disk kit for the 87 XJ 44? TIA

Thanks - I feel a lot better with that back there than the D35. Not that the D35 wasn't holding up, but there were a couple of times where it felt like it was way too close to what it could stand up to.

Did you mean 'use' or 'abuse'? ;)

First round's on me!

Yah, one thing I never liked were the low-hanging shock mounts on the rear axle. Thankfully I managed to never break one, but they did catch rocks on a few occasions.

That one came through Summit Racing - $544.95 shipped, and the link to it is here. As you can see from that link, their disc brake conversion kits are really poorly-organised - IIRC, I had to call both Summit and Teraflex to confirm that that was the correct one for an XJ D44. They were the only ones who had it for under six bills, but I'd still recommend checking with them rather than going on my memory before making the order.

Haha, yup... well to make a long (very long) story short. That axle was supposed to be under my rig and I was planning on a cross country wheeling trip this summer. In December I was rearended and changed my plans a complete 720 degrees (yup, plans spun in circles). Anyway, with money and time the way it is realisticly I won't have it done for next summer, so it'll have to wait till '09.

At least Cameron (casm) gets to use it and enjoy his XJ. I get to look at mine a drool. :D

Both, you've got a really nice DD, yet you also have a set of spare shafts.... hmmm... :shhh:

Can you get a picture of the e-brake connection please(i know about the shoes and the rotor acting as a drum, where the cable connects) , I'm really tired of the junk shoes n drums.

Sure. It's still in the shop but I expect to have it back somewhere between Monday and Wednesday, so I'll get a picture after it's back.

Out of curiosity - do you just want to see how the cable routes over the axle to the brake itself, or something else? I think that's what you're looking for, but just want to double-check.

Yeah where the end of the Stock Ebrake line fits into the backplate of the discs.

This may take a little longer to get than anticipated. Got the XJ back yesterday, crawled under it last night to change out the speedo drive gear, and noticed that the driver's side rear wheel had a nice puddle of brake fluid in it. Not sure if it was left over from them bleeding it or not (going to hit it with brake cleaner later in hopes of getting a clean read; fluid level looked OK), but I'm going with something being screwed with that caliper. Anyway, it's likely going back in to have that sorted out today or tomorrow. Grr.

You know...

There's still an HP30 holding the concrete down in my garage. ;) Been a tad busy lately...

Come on, you don't want the concrete taking off in the middle of the night, now do you? ;)

I'm still keen on the HP30, but further investigation showed that the brakes weren't the problem - the axle seal was. The gear oil just scrubbed off the brake fluid that was on the rim from bleeding, but as things progressed it became fairly obvious where the leak was really coming from. Anyway, I'll probably know a bit more when I get around to doing the ACOS in the next few weeks - right now this all took way longer than it was supposed to, and I'm a little burned-out on doing more axle work.

Mind you, that attitude'll probably change 5 minutes after the ACOS go in ;)

just a heads up to whoever was looking into the disc conversion i believe dc4wd is selling them in the mid $400 range. thats what i was quoted at. not affiliated just trying to help.

great looking jeep man i just threw in a dana 44 myself and looking at the ected as my locker of choice. let us know how you like it when you get out on the trails.

The more crap you keep putting on that thing, the harder and harder it's gonna get to trade it away to me. Knock it off already!

Got your rig back casm? :D

Yep, picked it up last Tuesday. Took it up a couple of the local trails this weekend: nothing too major but I did manage to give the lockers a couple of decent runs and they're working great :) The front takes a little longer to disengage than the rear, but nothing too bad.
