Simple question, if you were to build a engine coffee table, what engine would you use?

If you havent seen them, get out from under that rock. :D

But the kicker is, it has to be an obtainable block. I wish I could afford to buy a Ferrari V12 block, or an old aircraft engine, but an old iron V8 or similar is more in the cards.

The last picture, of the strait engine would be similar to a I6, but Im concerned with stability. Maybe a 2.8 V8 to keep it "Cherokee"?

So, what cheap engine would you use and why? Or just say fawk it, and get the cheapest one?

An AMC I-6 would look cool, but not sure how much reinforcement the floor would need to handle the weight. I'd also probably look at a table made from Chrysler 2.2/2.5 block, should be cheap to find and the fully build motor probably weighs less than the block for the AMC I-6 too:cheers:

good idea, i have the old ecotec 2.2 from my saturn with a vented cyl. aluminum, so not too heavy. totally forgot about these....

edit... how about a v8 or jag v12 for the coffee table, and little 4cyl's for matching end tables?

How badly is it ventalated? A block with a picture window blown out the side of it that's at least cleaned up and partially built might look pretty cool! I'm digging the endtable idea too! I'd try and keep it all Mopar and AMC though.... 2.2/2.5 blocks for the end tables, AMC I-6 and/or a Slant Six for the Server, Pentastar or Minivan V-6 for that table that goes between the two chairs, and one of the new Hemi motors or.if you can find one, one of the Chrysler V-10's fora coffee table!

what size table? i want to make one using a subaru boxer 4. super cheap, super light, nice size footprint for a table.
Table can really be any size, but 3x6 is a rough guesstimation of what would work best.

Mine personally would be in my basement, so the only weight restriction is can I carry it.

I cant seem to find the picture again, but someone did a coffee table out of the block, and matching end tables using the heads. Looked pretty cool.

If it wasnt going to be 100*+ this weekend I would go down to PnP and start taking engines out of cars. Good way to kill a day and mess with stuff I dont have to put back together.

not too bad, but i can make it bigger haha
i thought the twin cam of my 2.2 would look cool with the valve cover and timing chain cover off.

i think i'm actually going to do this.

It's pretty cool that the op submitted this thread. It's always nice to see new things and ideas. I definitely wouldn't want to try to move one of those tables though.

Although is not a coffee table, I think this picture belongs here too. I'd like to do a coffee table setup with an engine that I personally blow up, perferbly with a hole in the block or a rod thru it. Now that would make a good table with a great story. Guess I gotta exploded a motor someday....

I'll be building one out of a 4.0 after I finish the house. You'd be surprised how little one weighs once you strip it down, I'd say a bare shortblock is definitely under 250 because I can pick it up.

Other plans -
* floor lamps: old alloy rim, axleshaft, dana 60 diff carrier + ring gear
* kitchen drawer pulls: carrier bearing caps from assorted axles I've torn down and scrapped
* clocks: flexplates, flywheels, pressure plates, clutch discs, ring gears...
* doorknobs: pinion gears of course
* mailbox post: crankshaft

Hmm, that could be like a deer's head on the wall............I like it:thumbup:

boy a BA10 would make a great urinal lol:roflmao:

Are the BA10's strong enough for that kind of abuse?

:laugh3:

This thread has gone completely different than I though, and there are some really neat ideas. So, Ill just add some more pictures I have found over the years that I liked and want to copy.

Another block table

Cut down vodka bottles. I tried this with some bottles and it sort of worked.

Crank case sink. The gf kind of likes this for our bathroom:) I need to find a suitable crankcase, learn how to make concrete counters and I can do it!

New Belgium Brewery (Makes the beer Fat Tire) has this awesome table in some of their tasting rooms. I would love to make one, but my woodworking skills are subpar to say the least.

We finally have a use for all those shitty white shocks! Found these in a random shop in Montana and liked the look.

And finally, take a normal wooden picnic table, remove the middle plank, and insert gutter. Add wine and awesome backdrop as needed.
