ILLXJ just called me. He was driving along and nasty noises started followed by a lound bang. He pulled over to find that his bellhousing on the AW4 had broken and his starter was dangling. It did not kill the jeep, it's still running. If he shuts it off or it dies, he'd dead in the water.

He's just east of Topeka, KS. He's going to need an AW4 Bellhousing.

He asked me to post his number.
If you can assist in any way, his number is : SIX ONE EIGHT -508-1391

He was going to remove the starter, tie up the wires and continue on headed for UT

Damn ... that sucks. Hopefully he can just keep on going until he get to Moab, then try and fix it.

Thaaaat sucks. I wish I could help.

At least he seems to be making good time. Hope he doesn't shut it off to fuel up out of reflex.

Edit: Just got off the phone with him. So far everything is running fine, and he may have a lead on a replacement to be delivered to Moab. Right now he is just west of Salina, KS and moving on down the road.

This is Teresa, Wayne's wife .. he just checked in from Abilene, Kansas .. in a motel somewhere off Rt 40 ... on his way to Moab. Expecting to be around Denver, CO by this time tomorrow. He expressed his sympathy for ILLXJ, but he's farther west & doesn't have anything to help with.

That sucks. A friend of mine had that happen on his super duty once in the middle of nowhere. Did the same thing, drove till he found a welding shop. They tig welded it back together and ofcourse got a new starter.

I have a complete AW4 transmission, but it's in MI.

Actually...... if anybody from MI is heading out on Sunday, the transmission is near Traverse City, and I'll be there tomorrow evening.

I reminded him of the fuel stops....Don't turn it off!!

I feel helpless from here...... I wish there was something I could do to help.

Ok, talked to Jim and he's gonna detour down my way. I'll have the bellhousing sitting out on the porch for him (I imagine it'll be way early a.m. when he gets out here).

Sounds like Yellaheep is gonna got him hooked up.

 x2

On the way out to Moab for the 2003 XJFest / 20th Anniversary, Jim stopped to assist when we were sitting on the side of W I-70 near Breckenridge chasing a failing fuel pump.

He deserves all the good karma we can conjure up.

Just got off of the phone with JIM.
He's 100 miles east of the CO border. He's going to stop at the next truck stop and take a lil' nap, and get back on the road. Sounds like Remi is going to make arrangements for an AW4 to make it to Moab. He really apperciates everyones willingness to help....and so do I. THIS is what NAXJA is all about. [/sappyness] :patriot:

This is EXACTLY what NAXJA is all about.

Go Jim Go!

I had a similar deal coming home from Cherokee Crawl... show-stopper type failure & MarkWNC gathered my junk off the road (he had just got home and hadn't even unloaded his junk when I called) and we recovered to his shop and we spent a couple hours wrenching to get me pointed homeward. I'm not the only one Mark recovered either.

 to good people.

Well looks like we've got things under control for the most part. He's got a tranny headed to Moab. Again, big thanks to FordGuy, Rabbit, and Remi.

I started a thread here, in the CO forum and the 25th AE fourm in hopes of attracting the attention of some that may be able to help.....looks like it all panned out well. I'm going to lock this one. It's getting hard to follow all three threads.
