The gist of it: which side (of the rotor) do the pads with the squealers go on?

I am working on the front brakes on my brother's car. (Bad grinding noise) pulled pass. side caliper, and found that both inboard and outboard pads had squealers on them (inboard side of rotor gouged all to hell) pulled drivers side, no squealers on either pad.- Thank you Firestone

Anyway, with fresh rotors and cleaned up calipers, I'm ready to slap the pads in, but cannot remember which side should have the squealer on it. They fit fine both directions, but given the fact that the inboard was rubbing with plenty of pad left, I'm leaning towards putting the pads with the squealers outboard.- does it matter which side of the rotor they're on?-

If it were my Jeep, I'd just chop the damn things off because I check my pads from time to time, but Bro. needs that screaming reminder that something is off.

Any advise appreciated.
