best self defense 9mm round

The .500S&W can be fun (I've popped a couple cylinders full,) but it's more of an addadiktome round than anything else - anything you're likely to need done, you're likely to find better tools to do it with.

If you're worried about goblins, a .44 Spl is plenty (if you're interested in a wheelgun.) Get one that handles .44 Spl & .44 Mag, and you've got something you can use for hunting or long-range steels as well (Elmer Keith had a huge hand in designing the .44 Magnum - he used to plink with it somewhere in excess of 750 yards.)

If you want a "full-house" round, you can go with something like a .480 Ruger - it offers a significant ballistic performance increase over the .44 Magnum, without the "paw punishment" that the .500 Smith can hand out (I've shot the .480 as well - the .500 Smith makes it look mild, and Ruger does a good job designing grips. I'd compare it to a cranked-up .44 Magnum on the backside.) However, it's a bit much for home defence - if you miss, it's going to go halfway through the next house!

The 9m/m has a history of overpenetration, which is why I don't recommend it if you're buying a new sidearm. If you've got one already and want a defense round (assuming home defense, which is typical,) you'll either want a frangible round or a soft-alloy expander - Hydra-Shok, Silvertip, Glaser Safety Slug, and even the Cor-Bon hollowpoints all seem to fit that bill rather neatly (preference to the first three.)

@outlander - if you want some serious "hand cannon" action, Freedom Arms makes a five-shot revolver, 10" tube, .45-70. WOW! Shooting that smarted more than holding up a 12ga and firing it like a pistol!

I would carry a slugged shotgun in bear country, a lot more reliable to stop the bear instead of piss them off.

Yup. I almost sprung for a Marlin lever 45-70 when I was at Cabellas on Monday. Then I had second thoughts, Cabellas is no bargain on stuff. They did have a nice 500 nitro express double barrel rifle but $25,000 was out of my price range...

You don't think I pay for that stuff do you, no way am I coughing up 9-30 bucks for a cigar. The sale and marketing people drop them off, a few a day or when they get a new batch in, we 'test' them out :D :D :D

nice, no I was under the understanding that it was one of those "french" benefits, or are they "freedom" benefits now... oh well you get the joke

/yes, I know they are fringe benefits

off-color text that mostly blends into the background that you have to be looking for to see where you mention that you actually know what the actual phrase is so other people know you're just joking about your statement but that some people will probably miss because they aren't looking very hard and just scroll through threads really fast so they miss a lot of the pertinent or hidden information that would have normally kept them from looking like tards when they posted telling you what the actual meaning of your original statement is even though you already know what it is and included the off-color text that mostly blends into the background stating that you know what the actual meaning of your original statement is FTW!!!

Neither, I'm at work.

:D

your point, two hours till the afternoon pizzza/beer/cigar meeting, every friday.

As for the other one, draft of the longest run on sentence maybe ?

heh, we don't get those. Every once in a while we'll get 59 minutes, so that's cool.

Nope, it's the official explanation for instances such as those.
