Battery ground? Pls help

To the right is the wire that came off as i was trying to get bolt out. Any idea what size terminal i could use on it. And also what's the size of the bolt. It might be better to get another old and round that there. The other wire is connection to coil.

Those pics are worth a thousand words - as they say.

In that second pic, not counting the coil wire, how many sets of wires are there? Look at my pic and you'll see what I mean by sets. There must be two sets. Each set has one ring terminal. Do any of these wires of yours still have the ring terminals on them? If you can, straighten out that bunch and take another pic of them.

The wire size in each set varies, but are close. There are two 14 gauge wires, one 16 gauge wire, and one 18 gauge wire. If you look at the pic I posted with G101 shown, it describes where these wires go.

Can you solder?

If you are lucky, you may be able to get two wires in a ring terminal made to take 10 AWG wires. You may have to twist the wires together then solder them together, then crimp them into a 10 AWG ring terminal. The ring hole has to be 3/8".

Edit: The bolt size is 5/16" diameter, 18 threads per inch. The length that goes through the coil bracket and into the block is 3/4" long.

In the first pic, it looks as though there's still engouh hex left on that nut to get it off. Use plenty of penetrating oil, applied for several days, then go at it again.

Under un-butchered conditions you would have used a 1/2" wrench to get that nut off.

I just left for work. I ll check tonight if I get a chance. From top of my head there are 6 other wires 2 of them are yellow. Terminal that was attached to wires on right broke off in bolt. Can I use 14 gauge wires for all of them bc 2 of them are cut off and are too short to be able to ground. My buddy has a solder n he ll b coming Friday to help out w it. Thank u!

There shouldn't be Yellow wires there. Looks like bubba wired in some ground wires for some mod crap. See if you can visually find out where they go. Maybe you could find another non-critical ground point for them, like G102 (the oil dipstck tube mount braket stud which is used for the DLC grounds). G102 shown below.

You can use AWG 14 wires to splice in the AWG 14 and 16 wires that are used at G101. You should use AWG 18 wire for the only AWG 18 wire. If you use butt splices, use weather proof heat shrink butt splices. Use Blue/AWG 16-14 wire splices for the AWG 14 and 16 wires and Red/AWG 22-18 wire splices for the only AWG 18 wire.

Ring terminals may be hard to find with a 5/16" or 3/8" hole. Again, use weather proof heat shrink terminal ends (Same color coding as above).

Weather proof heat shrink splices are available at Home Depot (made by Tyco), and probably Harbor Freight. You'll have to shop around for ring terminals of the proper size.

When butt splicing, go back in the loom far enough to pick up good wire and stagger the wire cuts/splices so the split loom will fit back over the harness.

Use a quality crimper.

If you elect to use a standard bolt to fasten the ring terminals to the coil bracket, use a 5/16-18x3/4" bolt, a flat washer, and a lock washer under the head of the bolt. I've seen grade 8 fasteners that you will need at O'reilly Auto Parts.

Very good advise from Sidewinder.....
Choosing to solder the wiring connections when adding a length of wire is the better way to go when you have the time and ability. Of course the use of shrink tubing over the soldered connections is advisable.
Locally other AP stores that stock Grade 8 bolts; would be NAPA and Pep Boys.

Found two decent identical bolt at junkyard for free. It also has wires connected so I can pick right gauge and terminals at autozone. Of course nuts are rusted so I will probably buy new nuts as well. Thank u for ur expertise and help. I ll keep you all updated

Cool.

The nuts are 5/16-18 "Kep Nuts". Lowes has them. Just bought two for my Heep.

In a desperate attempt, since i am getting impatient, i connected ungrounded wires to 12 gauge wire along with electric tape and crimped it to a 12 gauge terminal. The jeep started with this ghetto contraption, but it would die off unless revved. there was a shit ton of smoke coming out of it, I am assuming it is due to it sitting for a long time. But no bus disappeared and gas gauge works. now I'll just have to be patient and put the right pieces together so that it can have proper spark to remain on, i hope.

What color smoke, My 2000 will smoke some when it sits since I replaced the front O2 sensor with a bosch unit, goes away when used daily.

And, if your grounds were shot ... the battery may not have been getting a good charge so may be low on voltage at this point as well. I know my 2000 will not run with a flat battery, and I have to keep my foot on it for the first 15-20 mins before it'll stay running (usually when I've come out of Camp and am heading home from work after 8 days on the ocean). whenever I let the XJ sit at home I pull the battery and put it on a cahrger/maintainer until i need it again.

Here's a source for shink terminals.

Got her started w the same contraption I tried to before just tried twice and it started right up. Should I still change wires to proper gauge ? Now the park brake and engine light is on.

While you may get away with those connections for a while; they will probably give you problems at the most inopportune time.
Personally I would fix the wiring and connections properly as soon as you can.

Ok thank you all for your input! I got a solder n crimp to do it right. I don't need it on the road till fall which helps get things done right. Now I live in New England what kind of oil should I put in engine? I also just ordered a metal break line there is one that leaks all brake oil out. Any pointers on how to get that done?

Which brake line?

Is it a prefab from the dealer?
