Baja 1000 JeepSpeed Update

I need ANDY"S number Please PM

Well, CONGRATS!!!!

As for me....I dropped the ball. I changed service providers since last year but didn't realize it until Lily and I had no service the whole time down there.:dunno: SORRY.

Tony and I were at RM179 and were scanning your frequency but never had comm's with 1701 until we saw you go by and then talked to you. By then it was too late. Whoever was driving said they had problems 20 minutes earlier. guessing thats when you need my number. AGAIN....SORRY.

Thanks for offering your help down there Andy. The 1702 Coan car was working on their car near San Felipe. I wanted to see if you guys could've gotten over to help them.

Damn that blows!! I wish I would have gotten a text! We could have gotten into SF in a heartbeat!

Ok Jeep experts.
Perry Coan here from 1702
We broke an ear off the oil pump drive for the fourth time in a year.
We are running a bronze distributor gear on a Dual Sinch distributor, one pulse for ignition, one pulse for injector.
We have backed away from HV pumps to stock flow Melling.
we do have an external filter and cooler setup which has another bypass besides the one in the pump.
This is really frustrating and we have no idea why we are having this problem, any help?

You are actually breaking the shaft on the pump? Sounds like an alignment issue. Have you tried a different dizzy? Maybe put some marking compound on the end of the shaft and spin the engine and see what type of contact pattern you have.

^ that's where I would start, check the meshing of the gear and try a different distributor. Is there any play in the distributor shaft, and has the same distributor been used on all four breakages??

No play in shaft.
Always the same distributer because of cost.
New thoughts are just plain too many RPM 6k
Also need to get my hand on a stock distributer because this one comes about 1/4" short of bottoming out in the pump drive and I don't know if that is different.
Keep in mind I do not build the motor but am having to step in here due to failures.

Can you post pictures of the damaged pump/shaft?

you have to be a member to attach images, you can host them on photobucket and post them here using the IMG tag links that photobucket provides you once the pics are uploaded, or by clicking this icon
insertimage.gif
and pasting the url for the image into the box that pops up.

Hmmm...

Not enough engagement? I don't know how far a stock dizzy engages though. Could be if it is short then it puts too much pressure on the ears on the shaft. I still say put some compound on it and see how much engagement you actually have.

RPMs not an issue - we hit that.

What brand dizzy? We run MSD and have a stock electronic from a 4.2 as a backup and we've run full seasons on both.
