Father recently purchased a 65 Ford Falcon, and it appears to have an 8.8 rear axle in it, want to confirm and possibly see if we could figure out any info on it based on the tags on it.

Housing is stamped on front drivers side with D5AW-B

Axle Id tag has two lines, first line reads ER-T 4JC
second line reads 87570A

any help on this?

Do you believe it to be the original axle?

1965 Falcon? I don't think the 8.8 was around then.

Pix? I believe both the Ford 8" and Ford 9" were around then. They're both "third member" axles (meaning the differential assembly drops out of the front of the housing, as mounted,) and the easy way to tell them apart is this: If you can get a socket and extension on the lower screws, it's an 8". If the housing is in the way and you have to use a wrench, it's a 9".

The 9-3/8" is similar to the 9" externally, so for final confirmation a measurement is indicated.

This is not an original axle, father is having trouble emailing pictures...removed tag and cleaned it, so i have some new numbers that seem to be more accurate.
Tag reads

This leads me to believe it is in fact an 8.8 (8.7 ring gear) with 3.07 gears in it. Any other info on the axle would be great! Thanks guys. Here is a picture of the car as he was taking it home

Doesn't an 8.8 have an 8.8" ring gear?

That makes sense to me however that doesnt mean much. From searching the 8.8 ring gear is also listed as an 8.75" ring gear. The link you provided clearly states the axle code is out of a 75-76 monarch but searching on Randy's Ring and Pinion they dont list an 8.8 for that year, instead the third member 8.0. I was able to send him a link with pictures and he confirmed it looked exactly like an 8.8. Thanks for your help!

That looks like a 6 cylinder, the V8 had a V8 badge as I remember. I always liked that year, HS friend had the ranchero version with a 289 in it another friend had a 62 I think, convertible with a 6 cylinder 3 speed on the floor and buckets. Me, I had a 62/63 that I built from 3 donors to end up with one, 6 cyl 2 speed auto.

Dont know if the car was originally a 6cyl or not. Dad had his with a factory 289 high output, looked exactly like the one he bought. He has pictures with my mother on their first date in the car. The one he bought has a mustang cobra 302 with a built c4 transmission. He doesnt know much about the build but it has a fairly heavy cam in it and a pretty firm shift kit. Either way he is having a blast re-living his youth since my mom drives their corvette more than he gets to!
