AW4 transmission whine

the trans seems to be working fine, fluid level is good and smells good, shifts nice. but it whines as soon as you put it in gear. reverse or forward doesnt matter. neutral and park the whine goes away. ive read that the flywheels have a tendancy to crack on the renix 4.0, could this be making the whining sound when it gets a load on it? its been this way since we got it years back and never had an issue except for the noise (dad drove it for a year). its been sitting for a couple years but still fires right up. these things are cool. anyhow, got any ideas?

all the auto flywheels have a tendency to crack, not just the renix. they make a bad knocking sound, sounds just like a snapped rod flopping around inside the engine. on an auto it's called a flex plate not a flywheel :D

not sure what is causing the noise, usually when they whine it means it is low on fluid.

I had a similar prob with mine a few months back, thought it was the t-case too, in fact i pulled it 3 times, had it rebuilt, the whole 9. come to find out it was the rear drive shaft. however i do have a cv jointed drive shaft and it was the cv joint that was bad. if you have a cv shaft i bet that is yer problem. sounds real familiar.

yea your right, i keep forgetting about the oem section. sorry about that, im just so used to going straight to so-cal section.
i wasnt sure if the HOs used the same flex plate and had the same problems, thanks. and yes i knew it was called a flex plate, but youd be amazed how many times ive used that term and was asked "whats a flex plate, you mean a fly wheel?" anyhow, it sounds like that isnt the problem since you say its more of a knock when they crack. the whine is similar to when the fluid is low on most auto trans, but its not affecting the trans performance any. i didnt check it hot, just warm since i cannot drive it because the brakes are not working, but yes i did the neutral thing. it doesnt have CVs, but the whine happens when i shift in gear but not moving. so it has to be an internal trans problem like the pump or?. or maybe a broken fin inside the torque converter? once i get the brakes fixed i will be able to check it out more closely. was just wondering if this was a common thing with the aw4.

When was the last time the filter was replaced?------Hans

i have no idea. i told dad to have it changed when he was driving it, but not sure if he had it done. thats my plan first to change the filter and fluid. i did fire it back up today for a better listen and it sounds alot like the pump going out. just has that certain whine, you know? as soon as i can dig it out of its spot and get underneath it, i will use a stethescope for a closer listen. should be able to pin-point it from there better.

you sure it is coming from the transmission?

i havnt yet been able to crawl underneath while its running and in gear, but while sitting in the drivers seat with the door open it sure sounds like the transmission. are you thinking of another possability?

Interesting....mine just started doing this also. The fluid in mine was just a tick above the ADD mark, but adding fluid didn't make it stop. It's definitely coming from the transmission; it's coming from the center of the vehicle, but I haven't had a chance to isolate it.

Yep, only in Reverse or Drive. I work for a Chrysler/Jeep dealer here in Phoenix, and the techs I have talked to think it could be the front pump going. Here's the crazy part: no one here has ever had one apart! Apparently the cost of parts is so high it's more cost effective to replace the whole unit.

yea, i had a feeling it might be the front pump. if it turns out to be just that, then ill have to decide if swapping over to the 231 TC and the larger output shaft aw4 would be a good idea. i doubt id use the fulltime 4x4 much here in so cal.

really?
I had my AW4 torn down completely and rebuilt myself in less than 6 hours, including the pump (pump only takes about 45 min to take apart and put back together).
The gears in it where under $50 if i remember correctly...

The harder part to me is putting the trans back in.
