Was driving home a couple weeks ago and out of the blue I lost all forward gears. Pulled to the side of the road and tried shifting it manually but nothing in forward or reverse. Turned the key off and let it sit for a while trying to decide what to do. Started it and tried again just to see and what do you know it acts perfectly and drives about 2 miles before doing it again. I turn the key off let it sit and then start it and it drove home the last half mile before messing up again while trying to figure out what was going on.
Fluid was a little low and dark so drainedit, went ahead and dropped the pan to check for shavings, checked the solenoids wet it sit to drain all the fluid it could. Filled it back up and it goes in to gear solid but there is now a kind of grinding noise coming from the bell housing area. Drove it forward and backwards a few feet and seems to drive ok other then the noise. Drained and dropped the pan again and fluid was much better than the first time.
So not sure what to do next. Fill it again and see what happens? Maybe I toasted my torque converter? I'm out of my element with transmissions especially auto ones. Any help or ideas would be appreciated
