I, for one, would never trade a well built, Japanese designed, overdrive transmission for any sort of turbo hydramatic product. The 400, especially. The first gear is horrid, it has no overdrive, and there are no provisions for mounting it to a 4.0.

Aisin makes some of the best drivetrain products in the world. A friend always tells me he wishes Aisin made whole vehicles, he'd be first in line!

aw-4's are not difficult to rebuild.

My first one took all weekend.

my second one took only a day.

I made my own "special tool" in order to compress the 1-2 servo spring pack for disassembly and installation.

otherwise it is straightforward....

I get my premium master rebuild kits from my local transstar distributorship.

Would any performance parts be avalible? such as better clutch plates etc...? so i could make the tranney posibly hit harder on shifts and maby could hold the jeep back on down hills with out gettin all upset? and just a master rebuild kit, how muchi is it gonna set me back? thanks

There is one place that's been posted that are offering "performance" parts, but I don't know anything about them, I can't even come up with a link for you...

however, transstar offers clutch packs in the standard oem "recipe" and raybestos "red devils".

I went with red devils since it sounded cooler. I didn't notice a difference at all.

a kit will cost appoximately 200 bucks.

Well, I can tell you from experience with some of the Supra guys, an OEM Aisin auto in a Mk IV Supra (3200 lbs) will hold 400-450 HP on drag radials.

There is an outfit called Level Ten transmissions that can build an Aisin slushbox to hold 700 Hp.

There is no reason you should ever need more than a stock rebuild in an XJ.

As long as they are not abused, Aisin units could very well outlast your 4.0.
