Been wanting to chop up the xj for a while now. I've always had ideas on what i wanted to do and i decided to go ahead and start cutting the roof off. Basically i cut it off at where the black paint was at.
Before cut (when i lived in Knox)

Now i m reading up on what kinda roll cage i want.
Im thinking Double bar (above the dash and above the roof line, X 'd behind the seat and "bars" going down the back. (like on a pickup)
All the tubes will be tied to the frame via sandwich plates.
I plan to plate the back up and put in some boxes for storage.

Its a jeep its always a work in progress. If anyone has ideas. Please let me know.
Thanks
Mark

It'd be nice if we could see the pics. You told me you were doing this, I just didn't think you'd actually go through with it. Who is doing your cage?

I need to change the loc.... lol
Dean's ride is sick.. mine is just "odd"

Dean... did you get the monkey bars welded in now?
I need to check out your blog again!
The roll cage will be a work in progress.. I'm thinking of some ways to create a one piece design for the rear that would create a square (flat top) to cover the holes of the c and d pillars.. and incorporate a box design to do keep the boxy tail lights from breaking upon rock impact..lol
i might have to start looking for a "brake" or something.

Don't hijack your own thread. lol
I'm not much for talking about my rig on this board. It makes me feel like a french prostitute. You know where to go for updates. Shhhhhh.

DOM? HREW? Diameter? Tig or mig? You doing it all yourself? Plating frame first?

The frame has some plating already.. Dom would be the way to go but HREW may be the way im going.
I want to do what you did to the insides and plate it up just to hide the holes and all.
I was told by others not to make my roll cage my 1st welding project lol. So i ll get the job done by someone else and learn on just body modifications.

As Nick Diaz would say, "Don't be scared homie"

You can def. get far with a cheap manual tubing bender and as cheap as Hrew is now-a-days you can make all the mistakes you want. ($40/20ft of 1.75"/.120 wall) Tack it in place, then have someone else finish the welds. Or just drop it off down here and we'll do it all. As far as cage/body tie ins, I'm at 18 pieces so far. I would get as many as you could in there.

I ll use the better camera instead of the cell phone next time.

I've chopped two like this. if you get with a pre built base for the cage get it in the 2door flavor. lines up almost perfectly with where the roof ends so real easy to connect to roof to keep it.from twisting up. any plans to plate or plexi the front part of the back doors?

Neat... still roking the full beat up body!
