Most atheists I know are open to changing their views if a god's existence could be scientifically proven. Finding a religious person who's willing to change his views is much more difficult.

As for atheists discussing religion more than religious folk, I don’t see it. When the subject of religion comes up atheists may be more verbose, or maybe not. But I never have, and I have rarely seen, an atheist come up and say “hey I’m an atheist” without some sort of provocation. However, I have seen religious folk knocking on doors proclaiming their particular stance on the subject.

Here’s an analogy for all who still have trouble fathoming why atheist would want to talk about religion. Say there are two groups, one (we’ll call them Pro-Hummer) believes the Hummer is the greatest vehicle on the face of the earth. The other group (we’ll call them Anti-Hummer) thinks the Hummer is a piece of crap. When the Anti-Hummer group gets together what do you think they are going to talk about? Planting flowers? No, they’re going to talk about why the Hummer is a piece of crap and all the data they have to support their claim.

So it is with theism and atheism. Theists talk about why they are right and atheists talk about why theists are wrong. If there weren’t any theists we atheists would have nothing to talk about. But until that rapturous day you’re stuck with us.

I'd say most people here are anti-Hummer, but there's not really any threads started just to trash talk them. Yeah, they come up on occasion, but it's not common.

But then we religious don't tend to sit around and bad-mouth atheists. Usually when there's a topic here on religion, there's a large response from atheists. Some are pretty civil about our differing views on God, others come in just to say that anyone who believes in any sort of religion is a fool chasing a fairytale. So my question would be, since in my opinion the latter tend to outnumber the former, why the hostility?

Since this has stayed pretty civil and calm, let's try to keep it there.

Even the Darwinists don't get it, man is a spiritual animal, has been as long as man became man (forethought, understanding etc.) instead of pure animal.
Spirituality has likely had as much influence on what mankind is today as the weather or any other survival of the fittest influences (Genotype-Phenotype).
Rabid atheists are saying they know better than a million years of evolution and we should scrap spirituality (what got us here in the first place) and charge of in another direction to whom knows where?

Darky, that was kind of my point- they're just people trying to congregate with likeminds. What makes it news worthy is that they think differently, which is, sadly, enough to get people upset.

I just heard about the new bill boards, I think what they say is, "Don't believe in God? You're not alone." I found it interesting that they felt a need for reassurance, but really couldn't care less about them putting them up. There's plenty of pro-religion bill boards out there.

My wife is a teacher and many of our acquaintances are intellectual types (I've known more than a few zealots). They tend to take an opinion to extremes, then turn it into a crusade.
In the German schools some of the teachers happily mix religious and Darwinian philosophies and then spout there views as gospel. I always tell my kids to make up their own minds, try to reach your own conclusions, from reading, your own experiences, make decisions with an open (and informed) mind and not just repeat dogma pro or against.

I agree, I was a bit over the top.

Darwinists and Atheists tend to agree more often than not. Or at least in my experience, use many of the same arguments. Both seem to take great pleasure in dissecting religious beliefs and in many instances happily ignore any possible benefits or the possibility there may be something to it.
