Anyone using Lucas trans./oil additive and?

I've seen Lucas work wonders in old/high milage engines. Is the same true for 90' Jeep 4.0 IL6 140K ?

Think I will flush trans (manually quart by quart) and was contemplating on adding a little Lucas on the refil. Same with an oil change and maybe 1/2 qt. of Lucas. Also planning on going straight synthetic oil using Lucas.

Any pros or cons?

Does the 1990 242 trans need Mopar compatible trans fluid. (Im old school and well aware of consequences of using non Mopar fluid in a Mopar tranny! Just unsure if/when this might have changed.)

I should probably do a change in front and rear end 30/35. Will use search for good types of gear oil. :read:

Bought sight unseen and can now see it was neglected.

Thanks,
Ken

I used it on my 99 when I hit 100K... I now have 223K.. no problems.

I flush all my trans by removing a tranny line into a gallon jug and starting, adding as needed while shifting through all gears until it runs clean or max volume. Use dextron NOT Mopar atf+3, I add a red bottle of Lubeguard. I now always flush AND backflush the radiator tranny cooler AND add tranny cooler. My new jeep I also added a Magnafine inline tranny filter. Even Jeep recomends synthetic gear lube for rear ends in extreme service so put it in anyhow.

No it uses Dextron II nothing on a 90 is Mopar it's all still AMC.

i use the super thick (like 90w140 or something crazy) lucas gear oil in both diffs. i've got a 29 spline 8.25 and vary rarely tow an 11 foot boston whaler. the really interesting thing about putting in the thick gear oil is one of my pinion seals totally stopped and the other one doesn't drip, now its just like 4in around the pinion that's wet.

i use the oil addative sometimes. usually i put in 5 quarts, then realize i should have put in the lucas. instead of draining out a quart of fresh oil and putting in the lucas stuff, i just put the bottle of lucas back on the shelf in the garage and try to remember it next time.

With ambient temps that low, a 75W90 synthetic lube will work well. Valvoline syn is about $8 per quart. If towing, I'd go with 75W140 syn.

Doubt if you can find Mercon/Dexron II anymore. Just go with M/D III (it's backward compatible), and I personally like LubeGard in the Red bottle as an additive.

If you're using synthetic motor oil, there's no need for a crankcase additive.

Good luck with the new 90.

Good deal and thanks!

I added a quart of Lucas to my trans after the fluid self changed (the clamp on the line by the bellhousing cut through it) SHifts a lot better than it did before. 250,000 miles on it. Also put it in my '73 J4000's TH400 trans when it wouldn't shift to first gear and kept dropping out of drive at highway speeds.

Carnuck,

The advice you were given regarding the grades of Dexron/Mercon is correct. As this lubricant improves its number increments.

Did you see "LubeGuard" at your store. I think you'll find this to be at the top of the recommended list of many good service shops. One bottle will last for years as you add only a minor quantity to your transmision or transfer case.

Note their is a distinction between the Red & Black LubeGuard. See their website for details.

There are now 7 different lubeguard products in my store. 1 for Dex ATF, 1 for Mopar +3, One for Mercon V, One for gear lube, One for engines, One for Mopar +4 (coming) and one for PS fluid.
