I was wondering if anyone dropped a ford 4.9 I-6 in a jeep?
I have a cherokee, nice vehicle but I have more experience when it comes to my ford, sorry.
Please keep in mind, I am not bashing the 4.0, just exploring the idea of an alternate powerplant.
I keep reading what everyone is dong to stroke the 4.0 and the end results, seems the TQ output is less than I would hope for, maybe it has something to do with the only examples I have seen were modified stock efi, what results do people get with a carb 4.0 thats been stroked? Don't misunderstand, usually an efi has more tq output but seems when people modify the stock efi vs retune, its not always the case, there are exceptions.
Reason I bring up the ford is, the ford can be massaged enough to make 300hp and 400tq, flat tq over a decent rpms range at that, with pretty standard engine modifications/ port work, all with a very mild camshaft, albeit carbed, unless someone wants to screw around with a stand alone eec box to replace the POS efi system.
The ford has a proven auto three speed tranny (c6), you can modify it fairly easily to get a lower gear for first. Would think it to be ideal of offroading.
I guess what sparked this thought, my wifes cherokee is peppy with that little engine, considering the stock power ratings and being a gearhead, couldn't help but wonder just how nice it would feel with a drastic boost in TQ and with a shot of HP. I followed along as many have stroked their 4.0 and posted their results and I thoght, I know where I can get a little more...hmmm...again, no offense.
I understand their would be a weight issue but also feel it wouldn't outweigh the additional power potential.
Just thinking hypothetically, again, this is not my bashing the 4.0, so please do not take it that way, simply exploring alternate engine options. I read where people discussed the installation of the chevy v-8's with reasonable feedback and felt this discussion would not get out of hand.
thanks
