Throwing a question out for a co-worker. He has a 2003? Or thereabouts Grand Cherokee. He is getting a grinding/clunking from the front right. Im going to check ball joints when he brings it in, anything else I should check? It goes fine down the road, no pulling no vibes. Just the clunk when he hits a bump.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do those use CV shafts? Check those.

Check over the suspension bushings as well if its just a clunk.

Grinding too? Then maybe the hub bearings? Those have a tendency to leave a vibration though...at least the ones I've encountered on XJs.

I think it might use CV shafts, not sure. Any way to check if they are good?

The only other thing I can think of that would clunk but not vibe might be a control arm bushing.

I don't have much experience with CV shafts so I don't know how much help I would be there.

I'd assume there should be no rotational nor side-to-side play in them as well?

We all know what happens when you assume though...

Definitely check over the lower/upper control arm bushings, shock bushings and mounts, as well as ball joints. Also be sure to check out the track bar bushing at the axle end and the TREs.

New shocks this fall, that was what I was hoping it might be but it's not.

Thanks for the suggestions so far

Not a problem!

I'm just trying to think of everything that moves when you hit a bump on the front passenger side that can wear out...there's quite a bit lol.

Not really, I just don't want to miss something exclusive to his Grand.

sometimes the upper shock bushings wear. maybe the nut is loose. the shock has a shoulder below the threads and the nut bottoms out. if so you can add a washer under the nut and you can tighten the bushing down further.
