On the way home from work today I'm cruising down I-40 when I let off the gas and hear a big clunk...thought to myself "now that couldn't be good". A mile or so later I hear an even louder clunk, smoke flies, and I have no power. Slowly make my way over to the shoulder and throw the hazards on. Get out to find my drive shaft hanging in the rear with the yoke still attached to it. Fluid is running out from the diff...from the bottom of the diff where the pinion has punched through the housing. "Eh I can drive it home" So luckily have my tool bag and dirty cloths from my previous trip to PAP this week. State trooper pulls up behind me as I'm under the jeep removing the drive shaft. Chat with him
ST:"I see your drive shaft is broken" (Resist the urge for a perfect here's your sign moment)
Shrek: "Yes sir"
ST:"You gonna tow it?"
Shrek: "No sir. I'm gonna pull the drive shaft, put it in 4WD and drive her home"
ST: "You can do that?"
Shrek:"Yep, it's just like a front wheel drive car then.
Go back to work, throw the shaft in the back of my jeep and head on home. Nurse it home on back roads the whole way. Clunking the whole way I can hear the carrier self clearance the pinion. 2 hrs later I get home, have dinner, and then pull the rear. Here are some pics from the carnage.
Rod through the side of the engine block...eh I can drive it home.
Pinion through the bottom of the axle...eh I can drive it home.
I already had an 8.8 waiting at my mom's house for me and 4.10's for the front. The jeep just made up it's mind it wanted that upgrade sooner then later.
