Okay the history: 1991 Comanche 4.0 HO new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, spark plugs and spark to all including coil and fuel pressure is good in the fuel rail but no fire. It will crank all day long and cough like it wants to start when you put the pedal to the floor but no fire. I am at a loss. The battery is good as well. The cps is obviously fine or there would be no spark. Any more ideas? I might try swapping my MAP with the one in my Cherokee just not sure if they are the same or not. I am not getting any codes to speak of either. Any help here is apppreciated. The fuel pump is working fine as well.

Did the no start happen when you changed all those parts? In general, if you have fuel and you have spark it pretty much has to go. So ... what changed? Could the cap or the rotor be cracked? Could the distrubutoir have been out of the engine, and not replaced in the correct orientation?

The rotor and cap are new and just replaced. The no start was happening before and after the parts. No change accept it seems to want to start but no fire. Balast resistor was broken so I got another good one and still no change. MAP was changed with good one and no change.

Okay ... you're certain you have good spark at each spark plug?

Next question is, is the spark arriving at the same time as the fuel. If you changed the distributor cap, is there a chance the firing order got mixed up, or that you didn't put the #1 wire into the #1 turret? Pull the #1 spark plug, also pull the coil wire, then crank the engine until you feel compression at #1. Then if you poke a piece of fairly thin wire into the hole you can rotate the engine manually until you have it at top dead center, but you need to be sure it's on the compression stroke.

Then carefully remove the distributor cap and check if the rotor is pointing toward the #1 wire.

My Jeep did this, Find your Crank Positioning Sensor, Find the connector for it, Usually next to the throttle body. Now, just unplug it and plug it back in. Now try to start it. It is a common problem with the 4.0's and has happened to me about 4 times and the first time cost me $400 to get it fixed because I didn't know better... Give that a shot. The CPS is on top of the trannsmision on the driver side and you can see it if you look carefuly through the engine compartment from the driver side.

Nope tried the cps trick and still no go. I am pretty sure it isn't the CPS. I am getting spark at the coil and the plugs a nice blue arc. I tried the the #1 piston thing and the rotor is pointed straight at the the number one post. The wires are on correctly I checked them at least 4 times now! LOL!! I haven't touched the fuel filter just yet. Could that make it stumble but not start? It stumbles like crazy now but won't catch. You push the pedal all the way in it stumbles then just cranks until you let off the pedal then it stumbles again and then just cranks. It does this back and forth. I am thinking it is not getting enough fuel but getting some??? I am lost I have tried everything I can think of and some stuff I did searches and found.

you may have fuel in the fuel rail, but how much pressure do you have? try spraying a starting fluid in the throttle body to see if will start with some fuel assistance. could be the pump is pumping but not enough. also a stopped up convertor can cause these symptoms.

Tried starting fluid and still a no go. I am at a total loss now. It just doesn't want to catch. What is a good way to test the voltage on the coil? I am thinking it might be a weak coil or spark. My dad was helping me with it and said the saprk from the plug was an orange color but the spark from the coil looked blue to me. I am just trying to weed out one by one until I get down to what it could be. Like I said it really wats to start stumbles like crazy like it is going to start but doesn't catch. Am I correct in assuming that since it has spark it should not be the CPS?

i had a grand cherokee 4.0 towed in from another shop a few weeks ago. it turns out while trying to diagnose a no start problem they removed the dist. after reinstalling it 180 degrees out it still wouldnt start. they eventually replaced the crank sensor (which probably fixed it )a nd it still wouldnt run.it acted like it wanted to but wouldnt. i figured out it was probably 180 out and put the dist in correctly. the jeep ran fine. i dont know if your dist was ever removd but if it was try to install your plug wires on the opposite post on the dist cap and see if it runs.

Already chacked that with eagle suggestion of putting number 1 at top dead center then checking the rotor and it was pointing right at the number one post. I might try switching them but i don't think that is it. The kid who had it before me had it running when he took it in a ditch and it never ran after that so the distributor should be in the same spot it was when it was running. I might try the CPS wiggle again.

Whoa!

The last time it ran it was put into a ditch? Was there by any chance WATER in this ditch? You may have an engine that was hydrolocked.

Got a new coil since the cost wasn't too much and still lots of cranking and stuttering but no catching. I have spark although it was a yellow color not blue and I have gas, the plugs have gas on them when I check them but still no running?? The only thing left I haven't done is the CPS and fuel Filter. Can the CPS be bad and still have a spark??? I don't want to keep throwing parts at this thing( thank god my Cherokee is in the garage as a donor for most!!) I can't figure this out Spark and fule should equal a running vehicle??

Compression check?

Did you check the oil for evidence of coolant?

Oil was low but it was fine. Don't know what the compression is on it but when I had the plug out on #1 it felt pretty good. Wish I had a fuel gauge and a compression gauge though to make sure.

Hey wantyed to know if there was any resolution to this? I put a reman. engine in mine recently and it's doing the same thing I know it's not 180 out have a new coil I have good spark and fuel everywhere. I am replacing my distributor tomarrow...hopeing perhaps the censor in it was damaged along with the distributor shaft. What did you do to finally fix your problem!>?
