Thinking of changing my intake like i saw on www.madxj.com by closing the stock air hole and routing air in from under the wiper blades have looked and see that there is plunty of room. has anyone done this and have good or bad experiance.

thanks cliff

I have done something similar, what I call my "selectable underhood snorkle" I cut a hole in the back of the airbox, and ran some 2' plastic plumbing fittings from there up to the top back driver's side of the engine compartment. I used a clean out plug on the airbox end of the fittings. This makes it so I can open or close the snorkle with a quick twist. I cut some sheet steel and made a rubber gasket that blocks the front (stock) intake. This is attached with bolts and wing nuts. It attaches in an open flow and closed flow position.
All this make it so I can can switch between stock, underhood snorkle and a both open configuration in under a minute.

My impressions on the mod are... sweet! I havn't gone swimming with my jeep but with the air intake under the hood I'm sure it would be much harder to suck water into the engine because the new intake is a lot higher, and pushed back away from the bow-wake you get pushing into the water. The underhood snorkle will suck warm air when open, and loose some power due to that, BUT I'm Canadian, and I get some Cold-a$$ winters. If I open both the stock and underhood snorkle openings, my jeep runs better when it is really cold. (warms faster runs smoother) also when both are open I cut down on the intake air resistance and get a noticeable seat of the pants power increase and quicker throttle response.

All in all it cost me about 10$ canadian (or about 1.50$ US) and the only thing I cut on the jeep was the hole in the airbox. Definately worth it.

(would post pics but I don't know how)

Isnt the grill your tapping into(in the MadXJ tech tip), the same grill that supplies the vent and heat system? If so, what are you breathing when your engine does a "blowby"?

Well I have done this mod to my XJ and it has been great so far. I have been running it like this for a couple of months and have had no bad experiences with it and there is nothing that I would change. The install is really straight forward and the hardest part was cutting that hole, that metal was thicker then I thought.

when i used to have blowby it came out onto the top of the filter sence im keeping the original filter and air box just re working the intake i dont think that will be a problem.

done some more looking and thinking thinking about using some 3inch aluminum dryer vent and fabing up the conectors. allso looking at the plastic grate on my xj looks like i have a hole ore 2 broken in it so im thinking of cutting it out and replasing with some form of wire mesh and maby even cutting into the pasenger side fake vent to make it a real vent proby wont but it is a thought.

last thought beeing insted of sealing the original intake for life make a removable cap for the original intake thats water tight for the trail and can be taken off for the road

only consern is we git vary hard rains now and then whats the chance of water getting in the intake? this is my present daly driver and weekend toy.

Cliff, Same here. I was running my 97 XJ this weekend across a shallow(30"+) "lake". My rig is stock except for 235/75R15 mud tires. Luckily, only minimal water was sucked into the airbox. I was going to go full hog and get a snorkle, but after reading these suggestions I might try some, I'm not a wealthy man:-) I like the idea of a removable end cap for the primary hole. Good luck.

That fake vent is blocked for a reason. You do not want to open or take the fake cowl off :twak: . Underneath is the blower motor and when water gets in there, it will get all over the passenger side of your XJ.

THANKS i was trying to find what was hidden under there in my haynes but haddent had any luck. Now i know to keep the cut off wheel at bay!

im hoping to find some time early next month to put together the snorkal. made a cap for the original hole out of some scrap aluminm and a wing nut used an scrap of old intertube from a bike tire to form a gasket it's totaly water tight :) and only takes about a minit to slap it on when ya get to the trail.
