AEM Brute Force Intake

Looks like a quality piece that AEM makes but I cant see why everyone routes filter too stock location.
1. units could be positioned farther away from intake and exhaust heat if the computer is moved back in engine bay. It would be simple to supply two mounting brackets for computer relocation. Then computer is less exposed to mud and water.
2. I feel filter and intake is better routed over valve cover to passenger side of engine compartment. It is a cleaner area and not as exposed to engine wash heat. Hood will clear fine since hood reinforcment is not in way.

My 2 cents

I've seen pics w/ a yj's cai routed into the cowl/area below windshield wipers. There might be enough room above the wiper motor to do that in an XJ. I've never thought of moving the computer, so that's a new idea, for me anyhow.

Does AEM make anything for the XJ that is for 84-91? or does anyone else make one that isnt from rusty's? and another question the lingers in my head is can a intake for a 91 fit on something earlier or is beacuse of the H.O. compatibilty?

I run my intake over valve cover to pass side. I got the idea from my frends XJ. He has a two piece setup using some old Turbo pipes from a international truck. I run a one piece setup using a cut down turbo pipe from a 06 powerstroke. Both are 3in steel tube, and niether rub. In fact theres atleast a inch of clearence to hood.

I did have to relocate a couple of parts and tweak the AC lines some in engine compartment to fit filter.
Damn I wish I could post up some pics, got to figure that one out.

Stock air intake bellows suck, I,ve seen those things collapse under vacum when they get old and nasty.

Anyone swap the AEM filter onto a K&N tube ?

Yes, Curt.

Because of the larger filter I had to shim the intake tube up where it passes through the heat shield.

All it took was splitting a few inches of heater hose and slipping it over the existing rubber seal. This prevents the element from hitting the fender well.
Like 97XJ Jeeper, I also covered the holes in the top of the wheel well.
EDIT: This is on an '01.

See that was a concern I had... The one I have hit the body down near the front nose of the filter... I guess I'll give the tube support idea a try...
Thanks Tim !!

i'm not really convinced there's enough of a difference in temps to bother trying to shield that area, especially at that price. always been a big fan of the K&N style replacements though.

Stock filter stays very cool at road speeds and with hood vents is fine offing. I use an indoor/outdoor thermostat from Radio Shack the older wired one. Placed the remote sensor inside the air cleaner and did some offing.
Air cleaner gets as much 16 deg F. hotter then outside air when offing hard. May get even hotter I quit when
Engine temp hit 240. It was some of the hardest offing I have ever done.
Then removed hood, vents will work as well, Air cleaner temp was never more then 2 degs over outside air temp.
Hood was removed, everything else was bone stock.
Unless you just like chrome and that open filter look. VENT THE HOOD. It help keep everything cooler under the hood.

It'll deff sound better. I found cutting my stock airbox (my current setup) to still sound good and be a bit cooler (temp-wise at least), then my rustys airtube, although its a little quieter now :( .

does it make a diffrence with the AEMs intake tube being metal and K&Ns being plastic? also does anyone know a website where i can buy these off that has cheap shipping?
thanks
