I don't see any reason why not - the steering down bottom should be the same.
You'll need the column (I don't know what donors you can work with - you didn't give with your year. A really good habit...) and the bracketry for the column (there are some differences between the two.) Grabbing the intermediate shaft as well can't go amiss - it's a spare part if you don't need it, and it saves you a trip if you do.
Early XJ's (1984-1990, and some early 1990's as well,) used a GM column - having something like that can seriously open up options for donors for you, and aftermarket sources and columns (check hot rod suppliers) are also an option.
Bear in mind to change your key cylinder while you're swapping the column, so you can use your original keys.
