Adding a tilt steering column?

I don't see any reason why not - the steering down bottom should be the same.

You'll need the column (I don't know what donors you can work with - you didn't give with your year. A really good habit...) and the bracketry for the column (there are some differences between the two.) Grabbing the intermediate shaft as well can't go amiss - it's a spare part if you don't need it, and it saves you a trip if you do.

Early XJ's (1984-1990, and some early 1990's as well,) used a GM column - having something like that can seriously open up options for donors for you, and aftermarket sources and columns (check hot rod suppliers) are also an option.

Bear in mind to change your key cylinder while you're swapping the column, so you can use your original keys.

yeah, it seems nobody's smart enough to right in their year and build. Mine's a 91 with the HO 4 liter. It's a pain the ass having a Jeep without a tilt column and I only paid $250 for mine, so I kind of want to put one in rather than buying another. I can't figure out how to get the steering column trim off of mine though. There aren't any screws or bolts...

The 1991 will probably have a GM column with a Chrysler key.

The trim proper (on the column behind the steering wheel) usually doesn't come off without tearing the column to bits, and it will come out with the column. I seem to recall that you'll need to take the bracketry off under the dashboard (for the column) and disconnect the column from the intermediate shaft - then pull the column straight along its centreline to remove it - but you might have to disconnect the firewall seal as well (I'm not sure - haven't done the job in a couple of whiles, and never on an XJ yet.)

I'd have to dig around to find out more - but that should be the general gist of it. The electrical switches should also be different, as are the operating rods for them - just so you know.
