Access to Aetna closing?

I think it will stay open and that we can get you down here to wheel Mark. It is a big place and has some good places to give the jeep some character. I gave mine a touch more of that yesterday at aetna (Since I went like I said I would) and skipped out on a meeting I had at two thirty which was completely worth it!

Sweet. I like character on a Jeep. :peace:

You know what they say, "A bad day on the trail is better than a good day in the office."

Ok, here's the scoop. At the hearing yesterday, the Planning Commission did motion for the City Council to approve the closure. Now, the City Council has to hear it and based on the planning commissions recommendations, it looks like it will get closed. The hearing before the City Council is in the second week in July.

Edit: here is an article I found.

Interesting reading for sure. Definately seems like more people are interested in keeping it open. I felt pretty safe up there and the people we saw were nice.

I'd like to know more about the alternate methods to access the mountain that don't cost $200.

...but i'm unaware of other ways up; other than the lease

from an arial view it looks like there is another entrance on the other side of the golf course further along hwy 41 towards the river... possibly near split rock (which i havent heard of till a couple weekends ago towards that direction...)

i wonder...

As much as I will hate to see it, Aetna will close. It might be this year or the next or ten years from now.
The few landowners in favor of leaving it be can only fight for so long before they grow either tired or broke or both.
Or maybe they will pass and whoever they leave the land to will not feel the same way as they do.

The other side has deep pockets and as the city grows it will soon see the area as another source of tax revenue. The reason it will be shudown will be for "safety" or "enviromental impact" or because we need the two houses per acre they'll build there.

All of the EMTs and LEOs I've ever met up there have been cool and some even ride Aetna, but they'll all freely tell you that the higher ups don't like the place and don't like having even a small part of their resources spent there.

I'm a member of groups that raise money to buy land that contains caves and climbing areas and I wish it were possible for large groups of wheelers to buy areas like aetna for public use. Unfortunately it takes in the tens of thousands of dollars to buy a couple of acres that a cave or wall rests in so buying a few thousand acres would be nearly impossible.

So if you've never seen Aetna, you might want to plan a trip sooner rather than later...........take plenty of pictures.......and get used to the idea that from now on it's pretty much Pay-to-Play as far as wheeling is concerned.
