ABS questions 1998 XJ

I just had my 1998 XJ out in the snow today for the first time and the ABS scared the crap out of me! I've never driven an ABS equipped vehicle in the snow, but my old 1990 (non-ABS) was fine for winter driving. I've read about disabling the ABS by pulling the ABS fuse under the dash and also pulling the relay from under the hood. I read mixed reports about losing braking power after doing this and was wondering if I could call this a "permanent mod" without removing the plumbing? Will it cause me any problems in the long run?

1997-2001 just pull the ABS relays and fuses. No change in braking. I left all the plumbing in place.

Or leave it hooked up and understand that there is an adjustment period for anyone that first experiences the pulsating of an activated ABS.

Nothing wrong with ABS as long as it is working right. Play with it a little to make sure you don't like it. It could really help you in a high speed slippery situation.
