a few pics of our wheeling trip in elbe

yeah my boss got stupid drinking and wheelin we had to take his keys

I thought I saw cans and bottles. Maybe you took away the wrong thing. Just my 2 cents about drinking on the trail shown in pictures on a public forum that both friends and enemies of our sport can see.

if he's already drunk you can't take his buzz away, so the keys were the best thing we could do. sorry if i affend anyone were just out having a good time, beating the hell out of our rigs. better than drinking on the streets.
and the omni is pretty cool, have you ever ran her down the 1320' ? i remeber that some of the older omni and horizon's were vw powered, it would be cool to put a turbo or built n/a 16v in one of those. i really miss my jetta but i was hard to use as a daily when fuel was $6.00+ per gallon. my next one will be more street friendly!

I agree with John, I was offended when I first saw the posts and actually typed a response and then deleted it before posting to see what others would say.

Drinking on or off the street both are stupid and illegal. If you did take his keys, then you made a very good decision even if it was too late.

enough people die due to drinking and driving both on and off road!!

On a similar note, I don't want to know about people "beating the hell out of their rigs" either.

You just posted the two biggest reasons why we have a bad reputation and continue to loose places to wheel!!

Just my opinion, but I really hope I speak for many others on this forum as well.

whats wrong with beating our rigs? thats what most of us build em for. skid plates, dif covers, rockrails etc... aren't these made for protection from "the beating". or did i miss something?

The type of abuse I am talking about is the damage that occurs to the tree's, trails, mud holes, etc and the left over parts that fall off vehicles when they are intentionally obused (rolled over on purpose) etc. I wasn't there to see it, but the write-up gave me the impression that the trails probably saw significant abuse due to the drinking and lack of responsibility.

x2. There is a big difference between wheeling aggressively (which you all know I enjoy) and senselessly beating the crap out of your rig. As Michael pointed out, that often results in not only damaging your vehicle, but the area in which you're wheeling. The worst damage that can ultimately occur from this is to our sport.

While the "Hold my beer and watch this, Yee-haw!!!" kind of wheeling can be fun, it is irresponsible to post pics of it on the internet for those opposed to our having the right to wheel to see.

Mudslut; we're not trying to beat you up too much, but just be careful what you post up on an open forum in the future. Hope to meet you and wheel with you sometime!

Cheers,

-----Matt-----

You must mean like what we saw at Tahuya today,On the south loop 1 cj,2 sams,1 full size pu,1 toy pu and 1 red xj with some sort of oversized radiator 6 in taller than the hood bouncing over logs that were put there to stop running in the soft wet area beside the trail.:nono:

i understand where your coming from, but i beat my rig to get it through trails that people or my friends think it can not make it through. we went back to elbe last weekend and kept the drinking off the trail. i had alot of fun and wheeled my rig very aggressivly! i broke both taillights and a few u-joints but that what it's all about. and some of the tree's at elbe you have to pivot off of. had my rig under water to the headlights many times without a snorkle, got kinda scary! i will post some pics on a new thread

Ok, we HAVE to go wheeling together some time!

Broken tail light...check

Broken U-joints...check

rig looks like it was pivoted off trees repeatedly...check

It's like we where separated at birth! :)

hell yeah... maybe the weekend after next. i need to same up some money and buy some strong u-joints. i want to check out evans sometime soon haven't been there since i was 14 or so.

Going to have to wait a little longer then that, see the "Finally, my dream has come true" thread for an explanation. :)

I went through 2 sets of U-Joints before I took KarlVP's advice and got the caps fully welded in, I havn't broken on since. I highly recomend this mod.

caps welded to the yoke or what, i keep breaking them little bolts. my toyota buddies keep sayin that it's a jeep thing we just don't understand why they always break!!!

I suspect you guys are talking about two seperate issues/fixes.

For broken u-joints in the axle shafts, preventative maintenance says tack weld the caps of the joints to the yokes of each shaft. This prevents the caps from working loose and then breaking shafts.

For broken u-joints in the driveshafts, you need to make sure that the bolts or straps are NEW and torqued properly and evenly. If you have bolts you can upgrade the front output shaft to a stronger U-bolt style yoke also.
Don't weld your u-joint caps on the driveshafts;)

Michael

what if we eld the straps to the yoke, i'm talking about the rear ujoint thats on the rear end yoke. me and my boss are so tired of breaking the bolts and straps were gonna fab up somethin this week, that should be bulletproof

The vast majority of the people on this board have basically the same set up for the rear axle/driveshaft connection. U-joint, strap, and bolts. Many people HAMMER there stuff regularly without issues. If you use new straps, and bolts and torque them properly/evenly and you are still having issues (breaking straps I gather) then I would guess your joints are not seated properly in the flange.

I would NOT weld the u-joint, staps, or bolts on that application. I Would put it all together well and carry spare parts.

Michael

yah. weve been using use bolts and straps. what the torque spec on those. i have a nice small inch pound torque wrench that would be perfect
