A better cold air intake??

Just a thought;

It's my understanding the bottleneck in the stock 4.0L intake tract is the 90+ deg bend the airflow takes with the stock accordian tube. From what I can tell, none of the aftermarket tube-style CAI systems are able to eliminate that bend completely. I was curious why no one has developed a "shaker" or thru-the-hood style of air cleaner/intake. It looks to me like the XJ would make an excellent candidate for such an intake since the top of the TB is so close to the hood. You'd be able to get the coolest intake air with very little flow restrictions and I think having an offeset, low profile hood scoop would look kinda cool......oh well, just a thought.

thats what my stroker is getting before it gets turboed

What I see as challenges to this idea are cutting through any underhood framing; you'd want to make sure you can maintain the stiffness of the hood by framing any hole cut into it. Reinforce the existing framework by adding additional adhesive all along the frame/hood mating lines (silicone caulking works great) as well as adding additional support around the hole. Water drainage and protection would have to be provided.
The hood scoop should be mounted with the opening backwards (facing the driver) as this will create sort of a "cowl induction" system and help keep water from being driven into the scoop.
I was thinking of scoring a junker hood to practice with and work out the bugs..... If you did it right the first time you could just have the "new" hood repainted to match.

totally stupid idea.........................................................only kidding, I'm jealous I didn't think of it. Now I'm gonna have to go get a junk hood.
I have always thought that black hose to TB was a bad idea, I would think that the "ripples" in that intake would slow down the air flow.

Half right! There is a problem at the other end of the TB on older manifold. The turn into some of the runners is very sharp. The new one and aftermarket once are much better. I sidedraft TB would have fixed both ends problems.

ive been debating on what type of scoop would look good on the xj.

mopar a-body dual snorkle scoop

amc rebel machine scoop

>>>>> challenger t/a scoop <<<<<< inexpensive and looks great, but pretty big for an xj hood. prolly gonna do it anyways
