96 XJ won't start... Help its my DD

Way to hijack. Anyway....if that's the case morgan320i...then splurge the $30 and get the new neutral safety switch...sounds like that's your problem. And, if your "320i" nick means BMW, I'm sure you can afford the $30.

the neutral safety switch is way more than $30. an ignition switch will set you back that, NSS is a $200 bit.

you can take it apart and clean it.

I don't have any symptoms of a bad NSS so I probably won't bother with that Just yet. I'm going to unplug and check the CPS, install new grounds and install a push start button so I can at least drive my XJ until I figure out the actual issue. After that if nothing still I think I'll get the new ignition switch.

I've recently suffered thru this.... came out dash lights came on... CLICK then nothing.
I had just rebuilt my NSS.
Steps I took ( read and maybe you learn from my pain )
1. Read about dirty old starters ( mine had over 240K ) NOPE same thing.
2. Bought New Battery ( PO put in wrong size ), starter and both cables.
3. Installed new battery. NOPE same thing. Figured it was the old starter.
3. Installed new starter. NOPE same thing. Started to take back but with 240K worried about KARMA.
4. Disconnected the old cables. Left them in the plastic looms. Installed the new cables. Jepp started right up. Spent next hour taking out the old cables completely and installing the new ones properly.

My cables were the originals. After this I also went ahead and checked all the grounds.

My advise, based on this experience. If you think all the other items I have mentioned are good. Run a new cable down to the starter and give it a try.

Good Luck

I cleaned the grounds and installed a push button start this weekend. Today I drove the jeep, every time I started the car I tried to do it Normal without the button. It started normal about 3 times out of like 10. And when I was pulling into the driveway ( slight incline) it stalled! It hasn't done that before. This damn truck has a mind of its own. On a tight budget right so it's hard to just go out and buy parts. What else can I try out to figure out what's my problem?

If none of the suggestions above work, replace the ASD relay. Its in the underhood relay/fuse box. The "Automatic Shutdown Relay" has gone bad on 2 of my 3 96 XJ's. Its well marked and only takes a second to replace.

I bought a new ignition switch today going to install it this week. But I just had a friend come by with his OBD reader and the NSS came up! I thought I was clear of that because my truck won't start in neutral or any other gear and I have reverse lights. I'm so confused on this damn truck!

Finally found the culprit! I cleaned out my NSS and resurfaced the terminals inside, reinstalled and BAM! Starts up like a champ! Reverse lights, starts in park and neutral. Glad that is done with. Now on to the next problem.
