96 xj sport 5.3 swap

what are you doing for skid plates?
I just installed a clayton long arm kit + 35"s, not realizing that they rendered my skid plates useless. ... an apparently no one makes full oil pan/transmission/transfer case skid plates... any plans/thoughts on that front?

origionally i was using factory country package skids, i still use an OE tank skid, i have the the T-case skid still that i plan on using i just need to drill and tap a hole in the x-member pto mount it

for the engine i have a rustys oil pan/trans skid plate that i plan on adapting eventually

are you running long arm suspension?

If not, believe it or not, the rusty's oil pan skid fits really well (depending on how you routed your exhaust). That's what I was running-- but I just went to clayton long arm, and it obviously won't mount up any more... I'm in the dual-screwed position of *no one* making oil pan skid plates for XJ/long arms and, even when I find one, the engine/trans makes that difficult to mount up. I'll probably end up fabbing something.,

Oh, and if you want a slightly dented/scratched rusty oil pan/trans pan, It's your for shipping (though given how heavy that thing is, may just be worth getting it fresh from rusty)

yup im running a b.lee 3 link, i have plans of eventually making a forward mount for it

modifying the rusty plate will be sporting -- I'm thinking of cutting mine to make it narrower, bolting the back end to the cross member, and modifying it so I can bolt it up to mounting holes on the bell housing.

anyway, good luck with the rig -- looks awesome. I've been following this with interest -- I'm definitely swapping out my 350 this winter, debating between an LS motor or a zz6.

based on your sig, i would say go wiyh the zz6, i think there somewhere around 400horse. seems like it would be less labor witing intensive to swap an sbc for an sbc. the 700r4 will need some extra beef tho if you want to retain it

on a second note, the jeep is now street legal, went thru the inpection process with out a single problem :)

also went to the junkyard today and got a big rubber boot to seal up the the lokar shifter, and snagged a 97+ center console for cup holding purposes. i had a home brewed cuphoder but the shifter hits my drink in drive and that is unacceptable

yeah, exactly what I'm thinking.. when I originally did the swap, ls motors were outrageously expensive. But since I'm already set up for a 350...
the 700r4 already went through a tranny shop and had all the internals beefed up when I installed it, should be fine.. hopefully.

can you post a few pics of the entire project? interior, finished motor .. would love to see it all.

ill do it at some point ill likely keep updating this thread as i add stuff to it, even non v8 swap related things

ive got a full build thread over on cherokee forum if you want to check it out

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f46/project-scarlett-taking-my-time-doing-right -first-time-161909/

nice. that's an entertaining thread to go through .. I went through some of the same things. Bought my truck for daily commuting. once I put my first set of tires on, I was hooked.

Love the original faux wood grain interior -- I used to have that, before I modded the hell out of the dash and installed a double din nav unit. wood grain was too tough to make look pretty after cutting it all apart.

i love the wood grain, it was out of a really nice country that had no business being in the junk yard

i still have lot of other plans for it too

any who went out and re did my return line, at 100% full it was leaking where the fitting "sealed against the tank, pulled it a part drilled the hole in the tank and glued in a 1/2" grommet. then added a longer nipple to the turn down into the tank and a coupler on the other side to squeeze everything together with sealant. hopefully v2 holds up

got the 97 console soaking with degreaser, its pretty grimey, gonna throw it on after i seal up the shifter

also ebayed a factory XJ dash clock, my jetta spoiled me with a clock in the cluster and its really bugging me theres not one in plain veiw.

san antonio has a "no cell phone" ordinance so i cant pull it out and oggle it for time or other wise in the city ill get cited

if you'r einterested, Danny at DD mods will take the stock bezel and modify it to accept a Double din nav unit... I had to move the hvac controls down, and use a 95/96 knob-style hvac control (they're shallower), but it looks pretty cool.. I can dig up a pic and pm it to you if you're interested, don't want to hijack your thread.

Did you already buy a clock or you still need one? I have 1 or 2

thanks, but im not a big fan of double din stuff"

already got one, thanks tho

Yup, it's all very subjective. I did it when I was still going to use the truck to drive out to rausche and needed nav, and I hate those pop-out windows. If I knew I was going to trailer, I would have just left in a nice single din with blu tooth. and a clock :-)

How's the clearance with the 3rd arm and the driver side down pipe/header? I've thought about going 3 link recently to get rid of my IRO long arms.

it clears by a couple inches, when i built the exhaust i cycled the suspension to full stuff with the front shaft in and made sure to build it to clear
