I just have a quick question regarding the build up of my XJ. I currently have an 88 that I have installed a 3" lift on and was planning to progessively build it up. Its got about 190K and runs fine now....

My question is this: should i work on building this one up or look for a newer model and start all over. I know the engine changed in '91, but is the difference that noticable that I should look into getting a newer Jeep.

Thanks for any opinions....

Well there are lots of variables here. 4.0's generally last longer that 4 bangers of coarse there are exceptions to this but in general the six cylinders last longer. What kind of care has your's had? What kind of shape is yours inover all? If it's in reasonably good shape I would say go ahead and build the one you already have.

Its in pretty decent shape, some body damage obtained from wheeling, but this isnt a big deal. Then engine (4.0) has had regular care, and the only problem that is present is some shaking likely due to old front end components that should be changed out.

Did it come with the factory D44? I thought that some in 88 did, even though most are said to be under 87s. To me, it sounds like if you need to change stuff out anyway, this would be a perfect time to go bigger.

Where are you in Davis? I'm moving in to Greystone in a couple weeks.

it's all about resources...if yours runs well...and have little invested...then it's a good choice. if you have the means to upgrade....then upgrade is good as well as the engine is good. you are right with the '91 and up H.O. upgrade as well as cooling system changes. there are many..many pre '91's running and running well, with many testamonies of excess of 250 to 300k miles. in this months JP MAGAZINE they go over reccomended units...if you can find them. p.s. i sell them..if you want to upgrade call me. 661-869-2800 ;)

I think my plan will be to fix this one up and then in the event that it were to die I would swap it out to another newer XJ.

Phil, I live in west Davis, near the corner of Lake and Arlington.

Wheel'er-DLR, thanks I will keep that in mind.

Cool, I think there are 4 of us now in the Davis and Woodland area

Cool indeed....I may have to ask for assistance from folks in the future though...:anon:

Nice! Just let us know :)

Stick with your '88 unless you can get a newer model for cheap. When I got my '89 it had 170k miles on it, but the price was right.

Guys, I am up here in Grass Valley. We have "agazillian" Cherokee's here. I personally have 4!! Come up wheelin! (see "Run to Reno" in the Trail Rides)
