87 XJ wont start

87 Xj wont start my dad flushed it, installed new stat, and new muffler. drove it to work, ran really great, got off work and it wouldn't start! Had it towed home and my dad pulled the dist. cap off and the contacts were corroded (cap is 6 months old) put new cap and rotor in. It started ran rough, then died. Early morning it almost starts on the first try then after that it just turns over. It has spark at the plugs and smells like its flooding. Help my dad doesn't have any more hair to loose!!!

My does the same thing every now and then. It just cranks over and acts like its not getting gas or firing after it kind of fires or putters a bit and dies. All I had to do was locate the crank position sensor, unplug it and plug it right back in. Even after I had it replaced it did that. My connector for the sensor is on top of the engine and I can see through to the trans from the driver side and follow it up to the connector by the throttle body on my 90...

Also, where are you located in Oregon. I was born and lived in Oregon for a While before moving to Az with my family..
