Toying with the idea of making an 8.25 steerable.. If this is to be done it will be for my 94 XJ/Buggy.. Thoughts on inner C's?? custom or D44's..
Outters, 44's or 60's?? Hydro assist is planned. 4.88's and Ez lockers f & R
Housing is already in the shaving process.

Let me stress, this is a concept.. I'm looking for valid input..

Thanks

Is this for a rear application or are you considering running the 8.25 in the front?

If it's going in the rear you had better plan on more than just hydro assist.

Why in the name of Beezil would you use a crap-basket 8.25 for a rear steer project?
Go with a Ford 9", or at least a 44.
Assuming this idea ever gets off the ground, that would be a load of labor and thought into a c-clip axle that is barely adequate in the first place.
The sheer loads created when turning would place loads of stress on the retaining mechanism, which in this case is a c-clip the size of a 50 cent piece.
Good luck.

Sorry should have been 4.56 not 4.88..

If this were to happen it would be a front axle.

As for the 8.25 being a crap basket.. I don't agree..

A c-clip eliminator would need to be machined.

Do either of you ever think outside the box (TheFortuneAteMySon,Beej)

In an effort to not even attempt to understand why you would go through the trouble of putting a 8.25 up front; I'll just try and help. The 8.25 has 3" tubes and a 44 has 2.75" tubes. The inner c's could work, but you'd have to bore .125 out of the inside of the knuckle. Your best bet would be getting a crane unit, inner 60 knuckle in a 3" DIA. HTH.

But just so it's been said, a 8.25 with 60 outers is just retarded...............

I appreciate the input on the Crane inners..

There is no need for any sort of C-clip eliminator. Front axles don't need C-clips, the spindle seal and backing plate perform the task of retainin the axle in the differential.

The fact that you think you need an eliminator has me worried for the safety of your fellow Arizonans.

Please reconsider this project, though it would be absolutely no problem to do for an EXPERIENCED fab artist.

Didn't you read?
He meant to say 4.56s, not 4.88s!
I think he knows his chit.
Good call on the spindle/plate Crash.
I could not wrap my mind around this idea to think that far into it.

Crash,

I never indicated that I was an expert. I'm learning fab and trying diffrent things.. I like challenges.. I've got an 8.25 begging for some trail duty.. I've got a 94XJ chopped up and ready for tube and a front axle.. My fellow Arizonan's have nothing to fear.. like I said.. Concept....

The only thing an 8.25" axle begs for is mercy.
Good luck.

Yet here you are, in the ADVANCED fabrication forum.
Makes sense to me!

I beg to differ.
My 8.25 has been living happily wearing 38"Swampers for 10 years.
I think this is a great idea and believe he should go forward with the idea.
You should look for reverse cut gears and IIRC they come in 5.13 flavor.
Also, you may need to check, but some company makes all the c's and inners and outer shafts already cut for this, but they run 260 joints, but that's okay too, because that's what I'm running in my D30 front.
Just remember to run synthetic with friction modifier or the No-Slip will never grab.

Remember to shift into 4lo from time to time, otherwise the front section of the tcase will dry up and you will toast bearings quickly.
