6+ inches of lift on stock shocks...?

OK, its killing me to get my XJ higher off the ground and i bought it with about a 4.5" lift on it as is. Problem is that its NOT a kit, front is coils with drop brackets and drop sway bar & rear is AAL & everything else is stock. I just spent a ton of $$ on more performance parts for coolant, intake, exaust, roof rack etc and so the question... I wanna order a full length aal and spacers from rustys to push her past 6+ in height but i believe she's still sittin on stock shocks!
OK, now i know the shocks will max out in travel and need 2 be swapped but i cant swing the cost for another 2 weeks or so, so will it really be that bad to put the added lift on and just NOT go offroading till i get the shocks and all??
A 3" BB will run me a mere $90 but the shocks will run me another $300 plus the converters for the front and bar pin eliminators for the rear.
So should i just order the dam BB and make myself happy and wait patiently for the rest???

why not, i did but my shocks wont even attach up now, i need to get shocks that are about 8" to 10" longer to cover travel

So are u saying i can throw on the 3" AAL's and then i wont be able to bolt the shocks back on or something???

Dude, seriously i know your kidding around with me and all but i got a pm from the board president about chilling out and i REALLY dont wanna be suspended because if i make a joke back i seem to get the shaft so PLEASE be nice to a felow XJ'er !!

here's the flat-out-honest-truth. I'm not going to to sugar-coat anything here, and this is not a personal attack against you or your character;

I strongly believe (and know that many others here would agree) that someone with as little automotive common sense as you has NO business owning an XJ with a 6" lift, especially doing it yourself and trying to do it cheap.

I could BARELY run stock shocks with 3" of lift. Come on man use a little common sense there is no way in hell you can run stock shocks with 6" of lift. If you are going to lift your rig you might as well do it right and that includes buying shock.

Well thanks for the honesty but in my opinion, YOUR DEAD WRONG ABOUT ME!! I totaly agree with u on the way im aproaching the buildup, but for now i just cant resist!!! You need to realize im trying to build up my XJ by saving my pennies and dimes so even if i get the crapy setup for now and then a year later swap out EVERYTHING for a complete kit and do it right!!!

Once again, your wrong about me but everyones entitled to there opinion.

No, and don't forget your brake lines, either.

I got the brake line extention kit along with the parking brake. Just waiting 2 install it.

So, NO they wont bolt up the huh?? Maybe there NOT stock since i have a good ride as it is and i have tackled some decent trails with what i have.

why don't you just do the right thing and wait the extra two weeks to buy the right shocks .and you aren't running the stock shocks they won't fit with the 4 inch lift you have now.

as it was stated before if you don't have enough common sense to anwser this yourself get somebody else to turn the bolts on it.i'm not trying to attack you either but really that is like asking what color blue is

is there a way to do anything cheap on a XJ?.... lol i know some peoples budgets are tight... but start saving money or buy a part at a time and do it up right... good luck on whatever you decide to do

Then save the first time rather than wasting money!

Absolutely.

If I'm reading this right...you want to put an AAL on an AAL and throw some extended shackles in there so you can get 6" (of lift)? Stay on the East Coast so none of my family are in danger.

As for the shocks...I doubt those are stock on there right now if you're truly at 4.5" and have stock shock mounts. My stockers barely fit when I had a 2" Budget Boost.

congratulations, you are the first person EVER to go on my "ignore" list. not only do you have no common sense, you don't listen to advice from people who do.

Lengths vary slightly depending on which series of shock, but according to the 2002 Monroe Master Catalog, stock XJ shock dimensions are

Front:
compressed = 12.625
extended = 20.125
Travel = 7.5

Rear
Compressed = 12.500
Extended = 20.375
Travel = 7.875

So your stock shocks have a total travel of between 7-1/2 and 8 inches. They are designed so that at normal ride height they will allow more or less equal up-travel and down-travel. Which in turn means that at about 3-3/4" of lift the shocks are topped out, and beyond that they won't bolt up.
