5.9L MJ Build.....

Amp,

Thanks for the great info! Couple of questions: If I understand correctly you were able to combine the ZJ harness with your TJ harness using the FSM wiring diagrams?

From my research and talking to wiring companies it seems as the best way to go about the swap would be to use the ZJ harness to control the engine as a stand alone system, have the PCM from the ZJ flashed to omit any ancillaries that the MJ doesn't have, security system, CEL lights, etc. Also while flashing have it flashed as a manual tranny so it's not looking for the tranny. This will allow me run a 46rh auto or a NV3550 manual. As far as the guages go, I could still use my MJ guage cluster and just convert the sending units to the 5.9L.

Maybe I'm way off here, so correct me if I'm wrong.

On a side note here a couple of pics taken with my phone of the little beast:

With mine, I used the dodge PCM and did away with the TJ PCM all together. The outputs on the PCM's were nearly identical. The relays in your control box need to be spliced into the engine side harness of the 5.9L. You will do away with the PCM from the MJ.

Not sure if your MJ has renix injection. If it does, then i may be of no help.

I used the FSM to track down what color wires did what for each vehicle. Then find the wires in the relay box and on the 5.9L engine and splice those together. It seems really odd but you end up having a blue with white stripe from the relay box to a pink from the engine harness. You need the fsm to determine what is what.

As for the gauge cluster. Yes, you "should" be able to replace the sending units in the motor with units from a 96 and older dodge etc.. to actuate the gauges. The MJ sending units may actually work if the threads are the same.

I only had to splice the engine harness, there are 3 plugs going to your pcm, nearly all of my wiring was splicing just one of these plugs. I left everything else alone.

I got lucky with mine, the pcm outs for the other plugs were nearly identical from the dodge and jeep. If yours are not, you will have to splice the wires to the correct outputs.

Forgot, if you are using the 46rh, it will need a signal from the pcm. So you do not want that flashed out of the pcm. The only thing you want out is the security features. Everything else should be ok.

I assume your dodge donar vehicle did not have as security system so no flash was needed?

Also I was under the impression that a 46r"h" wouldn't need a signal from the PCM since its a hydro tranny. It would just have 2 wires, one for the NSS and one for an OD switch?

My donor did not have a security system. I did not have to deal with that issue. You are correct on the RH, I had the RE

The wiring does seem daunting at first but once you start into it and get a understanding of what you need to do, it is not too difficult.

Ok....just had a encouraging conversation with hotwireauto.com. These are the guys that built the Hemi harness for Xtreme4x4 TJ. Really nice and knowledgable guy.
They can build me a plug in play 4 wire harness using the ZJ engine and tanny harness for $795. I would then gut the MJ engine/tranny harness and replace with their set up. Then I would need to adapt my sending units to the 5.9L for my guage cluster to work.

What do you guys think?

I'm all about this, worth every penny.

I'm getting more and more excited:eeks1: I will still need to fab a motor mount set up. I think that shouldn't be too hard. I plan to use the 5.9L mounts and adapt them to the MJ unibody rails. I may need to plate the unibody rails there first.

The jeep is about an hour from my house. I plan to go this weekend and really check it out.

The Elimanater looks pretty clean . I was going to sugest Hotwireauto as well. Plating the frame rails is definately a good idea. Were you thinking aftermarket headers or oem manifolds?

After a couple years of racing my MJ it now has cracks at the top and bottom corners of the back window. The lower cracks appeared even after installation of the 8.50 spec roll cage..
