1986 XJ 2.8 Non-disco front axle.
It turns out that the vacuum motor couldn't pull it into 4wd because the piston rod was bent, bad. It seems the HI-LO linkage had become disconnected and wedged under the vaccuum motor piston rod. When someone tried to put it in LO they pulled hard enough on the lever to bend the piston rod. Stealership wanted $164!!! for a new vacuum motor, so I straightened it and re-installed it. Seems to work OK so far, but the HI-LO linkage needs adjusting. Right now all I have are HI and N.
I had an idea to convert to a 2-lever shift, rather than cable shift in place of the vac system. Has anybody done this type of conversion?
