Well, the red '96 xj sport, with a 3"f-4"r lift, 4:10 gears and 31x10.5 AT-KO's finally gave it up and won't start anymore. You could hear the burnt valves in the exhaust, sounded sick... Peterson Fabrication and 4x4 in Loveland took on the project to bring it back to life. Am gonna put a 3 link longarm kit on, complete the 4" lift and put 33" tires on the ex daily driver, now the new toy ! ! ! :-)
my problem is the cost of the rebuilt 4.0L motor. Quoted "Up to $2,300 using the same block with new water pump, sensors, belts, etc.". The shop also said a new longblock can be purchased at Checker Auto for $1,900. Until I hear any better suggestions, I will just go with the full rebuild of the old block.
Suggestions please... Mike -xjnco-

Congratulations on hitting 500k.
What are the warranty differences and are there any kind of torque/hp numbers on either deal?
$1900 is just the remanufactured motor not install?

3 yr unlimited mileage warrantee on both... $1900 is for the longblock with valve cover and oil pan installed, no other accessories or installations.

Does anyone have a 4.0L "S" series motor for sale? The "S" series fits a '96-'98 Cherokee, Grand Cherokee or Wrangler.

The info I read was the s series was in the 1996 - 1998 jeeps

Found one for $700 +$100 core at Jeeps Unlimited in Erie, 217,000 miles on it.
Now I'll have the chance to build (stroke) the old motor.

Jeezus..... $800? I can beat that by 50%..... And a lot fewer miles.

Jeeps Unlimited is one of the worst places to buy used parts. Get one from Troy.

Care to share that info? If anything just for my own edification, but I believe whatever you read is likely incorrect.

Troy, set me up...with a motor that will bolt into my '96 XJ Sport. Would any 4.0L HO motor fit? I thought they were more year specific. 1996 was a bastard year for the xj, with pre and post OBD 2 specs.

Mike,

The OBD stuff is all bolt on/screw on stuff. The HO engine itself is all the same '91 to '99 for the XJ.

Your intake, sensors, distributor, injectors etc.... will need to be swapped from your bad engine to the donor.

Otherwise, it's a straight swap.
