23-35% Better mileage with Acetone?

Not to restart the acetone thread again, but it worked in my wifes old Cavalier but it only made a 2-3 MPG difference. It might make a bigger difference if you drive more miles per week though.

Did you ever ask yourself why simply adding acetone to your gas would increase your idle speed by 100 RPM? It's really very simple. Your injectors were dirty. The acetone cleaned them. Any injector cleaner would have worked just as well. Running some injector cleaner every few hundred miles will cost a lot less than acetone in every tank and will achieve the same result.
 
My carbed 78 olds delta I noticed it right away. Since the acetone breaks the surface tension in the gasoline and helps with vaporizing the fuel I think it has a greater affect on carburated engines since they are already doing a poorer job than injection.

I have noticably quicker starts immidiately after adding it, no time to clean anything out. Idles much smoother and at a hair higher rpm. Still wating on the MPG figures after this tank full.

I have no CAT to worry about on that rig.... or anything I own for that matter.
Kinda makes you wonder on this stuff how the studies that show it as bad are almost always tied to oil companies. Why would they want to add, or have the public adding, something to their gasoline that will drop their sales by 20%.

I use injector cleaner regularly and it never has an immediate effect on idle speed. There are links to many studies in the link I posted all independent and none sell Acetone. The main reason for the studies it to see if Acetone should be used in place of Alcohol, Alcohol greatly reduces gas mileage and is corrosive. I still remember when some gas company’s claimed to give better gas mileage, Shell was one and it was true.
 
I did the Acetone for several tanks and noticed about 20% increase in gas mileage (and I was purposefully driving like more of a jackass with the acetone, so that the gain could not be attributed to driving style)

I've forgotten to use it for the past couple months (truck isn't my DD) and the gas mileage is right where it used to be. This leads me to believe it isn't (entirely) an issue of cleaning injectors.
 
As noted, this has been kicked around for awhile. If you go over to the Off-Road BBS, you will find a lot of writeups on it.
Basically, they start and finish the same way....

One or two guys say they are getting great results. A few weeks later they chim back in and admit that it made no difference.

What is really happening is that when you add the acetone you become very cognizant of your driving. In most cases, people tend to drive better...hence, the better gas mileag. But after awhile you forget about it and go back to your old habits....and guess what....gas mileage goes back down.

not my experience.

I drive pretty conservatively with m8(truck, but when I put $me acetone in I purposesllx st zted using full throttle off stops, higher freeway speeds, etc.

if you read up 2 posts you will read that I gained about 20% in mileage. It also felt like it had a bit more power and definitely smoothed the idle out.

I wasn't real exact on mixture, I played around with between 1 and 2oz per 10 gallons, didn't seem to make any difference between those ratios.

No, there is one guy who has written about this several times, and keeps getting copied over and over. If you actually read through all those "many studies" you'll find that every single one of them leads back to the same guy.

Snake oil. Get a Tornado. It will improve your gas mileage more than acetone.

Can you provide details on how you measured your original mileage and how you measured the increase? Frankly, I find a 20% improvement very hard to believe. If it's true then, congratulations, you're the first.

Not with fuel injection. it may trick the MAP sensor into leaning the mixture some though.

Yes. That's the point. Acetone will increase your gas mileage as much as a Tornado--which is to say, not at all.

Look, think this through. If the gas companies could give you a 20% increase in mileage just by adding a little acetone to their mix, don't you think they'd do it? I mean, can you imagine how quickly Texaco could corner the market on gas sales if they could prove that their gas gives better mileage than everyone else's? They'd make BILLIONS!!!

Think there's some conspiracy, because then everyone would be selling less gas? Are you wearing your tin-foil beanie? When there are billions of dollars on the line, no one--and I mean NO ONE!--can keep a conspiracy like that going for very long. Even OPEC couldn't keep their attempts to control the gas supply going for more than a year or so before they started competing against each other.

No, there's no conspiracy, and there's no magic to acetone.

unless it was harmful to the enviroment and made you pollute more.

MTBE helped gas mileage, but cause cancer and other crap, so it got eliminated from gas in CA....

You got to be a Republican, I don't know if it's a conspiracy or not but the farmers lobby in the US sure are in favor of using Alcohol.
I'm 60 yrs old and your must be younger but gas company's used to compeat on gas mileage at one time. Union 76 was one of the best then Shell so there are ways they can alter milage if they wish.
The only other reasons I can think of why they don't is Farm Lobby, and there is no way to (corner the Market) because everyone could add the Acetone if they wanted.

BTW the Feds are always pushing the Auto Company's to improve gas mileage but never that I know of have forced gas companies to improve theirs.

how did I measure? by filling up at the same station, resetting the trip meter, driving 2-300 miles, filling up again at the same station and dividing the number of miles by the number of gallons to fill back up. I used to struggle to get 15 driving very conservatively, with acetone and driving like a jackass I never got below 17.
