So I just bought a 2001 XJ and decided to get a new muffler. I bought a Thrush Welded which is said to be a FM40 knock off. I cut the old muffler out and put in the Thrush 2.5 inch with a turn down. Now when it idles it sound like it has exhaust problems. It almost sound like it is idleing at 1000, but its not. Its does not have that kinda "Glub glub glub" sound. Then when I get on the gas it realy does not sound loud. Just a louder version of it being stock. Not a head turner. Now I popped the hood and went under and saw that it has the two pre cats and the main cat. Are these cats holding the muscle back that I am wanting to hear? Everyone I know says dont take the cats off the XJ, so I did not.

??????????????
Since when did the sound have anything to do with power?
All show and no go is a juvenile approach.

Well, I'm not sure about the newer OBD2 trucks, I did like how the Renix XJ's with gutted cats' that I've been around sounded, even at idle. Then again, I actually like how the 3.8l V6 in my folks Town & Country through the stock muffler too:dunno:

I have a 97 with a thrush welded muffler and it sounds good. Loud when I want it to be and quiet when I don't. As for the cat thing, no it will sound bad and removing cats does nothing other than that.

You won't get the muscle car "glub glub" sound with a simple exhaust change. You would need to change the cam to something with a lot more duration... but that will make your Jeep nearly undrivable.

I think a lot of people who swap out their mufflers are looking for a V8 sort of tone... Thats never going to happen with a 4.0. Unless like Talyn said, you swap in a very different cam shaft.

I have a flowmaster super 44 on my 2000 with the pre-cats. Those mufflers usually need time to break in and get louder. I will say that it sounds a lot better with a tailpipe. With a turndown it just points all the sound under the vehicle and makes it sound broken. Put on a 2.5" tail pipe and drive it for a while then report back.

Well I am 18. And the jeep has all the power I need, If i want more I will re-gear. But I have seen some cherokee at the Superlift park the sounded amazing with my same muffler.

do you know if it had any other mods done to it?
intake
headers
new downpipe from headers

these could all change the sound of the exhuast note.

and as stated above, give it some time... my FM 50 has changed over the years from a rather "tingy" and overly loud (for my taste atleast) sound... to a nice mellow drone that I can appreciate, and get to growl a bit with a touch of gas.

i had a cherry bomb extreme 1 in 2 out double dumps. with cats.. loud ass hell sounded good.. my new favorite is the PYPES VIOLATOR.. very nice sounds these 2 mufflers will deff give u the sound ur lookin for both bout $60

The turn down is your problem.

I have a Thrush Welded (Flowmaster 40 Knockoff) and it sounded sick and would set off car alarms on demand when it cut off right behind the rear seats.

When I welded on my turndown (from Kragen Auto Parts) it made it unbelievably quieter. So quiet that I forget to shift sometimes :P. It is the loudest in the very low (slightly bogging) RPM's and quiets down once it hits around 2k.

Take off the turndown to get the sound you want.

My magnaflow 2.5 has a nice deep rumble at idle and it's plenty loud, much louder than my old Flowmaster 40. I have a turndown right after the muffler as well, the same as when I had the FM on there.

Jeep450r you shouldn't have your exhaust cut off straight under the car, you're dumping all kinds of heat right at your gas tank and the underside of the body - running the risk of burning the carpet or even the undercoating on the bottom of the car. Not to mention the risk of sparking or flame coming out of the pipe, rare but it does happen. Even with a turndown if its not pointed at enough of a down angle you run the risk of heating your rear axle tube up hot enough to where you can't touch it with your bare hand (guess how I know that one? :D).

I never had a problem with it.. Not saying others wont. Thanks for the heads up.

no prob, enough jeeps get beat on around here the last thing i want to hear about is one burning to the ground

I've been trying to decide what muffler to install on mine. The PO of cut off the cat and put some big monstrosity of a muffler on with a turn out right in front of the tire. i've been thinking the $20 glasspack at the auto parts store would sound ok. But only with the whole tailpipe? It's going on a trail only rig and just need something small and out of the way.

Thanks for the thread!

I've said it before and I will say it again. Please don't put a glasspack on it! The thrush muffler is only $15 more and will sound better. I understand its a trail rig but glasspacks are annoying

I've been running a Thrush fully welded for about a year now. Great sound, andprice. I have a 2000 xj . I ran a summit fully welded for two years and it was loud, and I got many compliments on exhast note. The baffles rotted out in that crapper. The thrush is much higher quaility. and tone is better. I turned heads at Rasush creek going down the trails. It was funny.

X2 on Tail ;pipe. Thats were the money is. I also eliminated rear non o2 moniterted converter. Replaced with 2.5" strait pipe. I have been reusing stock 2.25" tialpipe.

Highly recomend if one can not afford a FLowmaster.
