04 GC 4x4 problems

My brother has a 04 GC and when he shifts into full time, the light don't come on. If he shifts into part time the light comes on. When he tries to shift back to 2WD he has to be stopped, put it into neutral then reverse the back into drive and it will go back to 2WD. He has the select trac transfer case. It seems like it goes into 4WD fine just can't get it to go back to 2WD to easy. What would be matter with it. He wants to take it back to the dealer, but he was wondering if anyone knew what was wrong so he knew how long he would be without his jeep. It has around 16,000 miles on it.

that's pretty much normal w/ the 242 transfer case.


there is no full time light on the grands AFAIK (there isn't on my 01 WJ) and sometimes I gotta fight w/ it to get it back in 2wd. it's always been that way and it always will be that way (my XJ and MJ both have 242s and guess what, they do the same crap too)

my 01's got 108,600 miles on it.

I really remember but I don't think he had to do all that to get back into 2WD though. I will have to ask him how it was last year.

04? Have you asked the dealership about it? Warranty?

make sure the pressures are all the same, or you will have problems with 4wd engagement and disengagement with that transfer case.

I will check the tire pressure on it tomorrow. He wants to take it the dealer in a day or two.
