From my experience with a 1990: Exhaust manifold cracks, radiator, water pump, door hinges, front seats (esp. reclining mechanism), windshield wiper linkage, wiring harness to blower motor shorts out, headliner sags, gas leaks at filler tube,and of course, the brake rotor recall.

What complications are there in swapping a 4.0L from a 1990 xj into a 1991? As I recall, 1991 was the first year for the HO version of the 4.0L.

Remember there has been a lot of flooding in the south in the last few years. Carefull you don't get one that went for a swim.

I don't know exactly where since I never identified the location of the short, but I mis-spoke when I said to the left of the heater controls -- it was the wires from the heater controls heading to the passenger side (towards blower and resistor pack). Access through the radio/heater opening...

Will the automatic transmission from a 1990 XJ replace the one in a 1996 XJ without major issues? Both vehicles have 4.0L engines.

It can be the blower motor or the resistor pack, but in many cases it is a short in the wiring harness. My 90 XJ was doing this, even after replacing the motor and resistor pack. It seems that it is common for the wiring harness to get pinched somewhere in the sheet metal behind the dash...
