Mine growled for a year after the same change. Noise there is pretty much a given, it is evidently unavoidable in the 8.25. Even stock factory gears have a 50% chance of noise.
But, it still means you need to check every thing that could be a problem, including the TC output bearings and runout.
By "start" in first gear, I presume you mean that with the selector on 1, the car doesn't move? What does happen? Does the engine rev appropriately? Do the rest of the selector positions function correctly?
I'm thinking that the selector is out of adjustment.
I know that the FRS Channels are open, but they are limited in wattage. I believe the Baofeng HTs are within limits, however, they are not "Type Approved" by the FCC for FRS channels.

Things to check: bugs clogging radiator, inside the core clogged with minerals, aux fan not coming on, hoses or engine passages clogged. Overflow system not working.
My problem was the radiator core passages were clogged enough to keep it just below the red line.
