My 96 4.0 w/ 5 speed finally threw the CEL code for random misfire.
All of the secondary ignition is new including a cap with brass contacts. I removed my injectors and had them tested and they all came back fine. I put my noid light on each of the injector connectors and they flashed fine...
But...yesterday on my way home, it ran somewhat better. It was the first time I've ever let the fuel get low enough that the the light came on a few different times. It also idled around 1400 rpm or so. Weird. Did some stop and go and after about 20 miles or so. It was much smoother and easier...
Still haven't figured this out...nor have I popped the head off either. Driving other vehicles. I hate when non-project vehicles become project vehicles!
I took it out because the three wires going to the distributor power were crimped. The first replacement distributor had too much material where the wires pass through. IIRC, the original had a rubber grommet and these replacements have plastic. So when the cap was screwed down it crimped them...
My 96 4.0 had an annoying miss...but was reliably running . Took out the distributor this morning and took it back to Autozone after I noticed that the three wires had been pinched at the cap. And upon closer inspection, one of the wires had an actual cut. Probably some unwanted electricity...
Ahhh. Know the feeling of driving something sketchy across the country! Just drove this one, pretty much sight unseen, to Ky. from Wa. I'm convinced my head gasket has given in too. At least the parts are cheap and I can do it myself...when the weather gets a little better.
Checked the fuel pressure today and it's at a nice steady 50 psi. Listening to the tailpipe putters, I'm pretty convinced it's the head gasket allowing cross-firing. Been here, done it before with prior vehicles. Always hold out in denial though.
You mention a connector problem. Which connector(s) have you seen this on. Having some weird issues myself on my '96 and will be checking fuel psi in the next few days.
I've done a lot of jiggling of the underhood wiring harnesses and can't cause any changes either. I have also pulled, checked and reconnected just about all of the underhood connectors but none have been nasty in any way.
I read a post that someone had a fuel pump not producing full pressure...
