No Overdrive & Check Engine Light is on ?

Come to think of it Jacob, you are correct. The Jeep does still rev lower in 4th, but the converter isn't engaging fully. I would imagine it is bad for the trans to drive in this situation, right?

No Overdrive & Check Engine Light is on ?

There is a switch on the brake pedal that engages overdrive. Drive it at 50 mph, with foot on gas constant, push brake slightly. If rpm does not change, this switch is problem. Also, buy a brand new NSS

    Anti-freeze leak

I would just fill the hole with red RTV silicone sealant. Let it dry for a day. That stuff is remarkable strong

    Really good gas mileage

That must be nice. I have always kept my XJ in great condition, it's a 96 Country. On one road trip, I topped off as much as I could until gas spilled, and honestly ran it til the engine sputtered. I had 370 miles on the trip. I would sure love to reach 400 but I have never come close in 160,000...

Time to Decide, to Keep XJ or not keep XJ

I like Johnnie Walker. Tell that wife to go buy her own vehicle if her 10 year newer than your car isn't good enough. Keep that Jeep and concentrate on the motor and drivetrain.

    Factory Steering Box Play?

I spent more time and energy than you can think of trying to get rid of that 2 inches of play. You never will. It is inherent to recirculating ball steering. I ended up putting a 12:1 ratio camaro z28 box in my Jeep and I love it, but the play is still there.

    Really good gas mileage

Anyone on here who claims to or thinks they are getting 25 mpg is delusional. A mint condition stock 4 liter automatic XJ will get about 19 mpg on the highway at best and no modifications ever will change that.

    Replacing UCA/LCA bushings

Burn it out with a torch from the hardware store, they arent expensive. Be careful, it can flame up and cause a fire, but it works well

    Is he right? Tranny cooler

Mine is mounted on the passenger side to the front of the A C condenser with those little black plastic poke through things

    Is he right? Tranny cooler

If its any help, I got my 96 in April 2000, with 70K, immediately installed cooler with cooler first, then radiator, then back to tranny, so radiator could help regulate temps. I now have 230K, tranny has never once hiccupped and shifts perfectly, and I even tow big loads once or twice a year...

a possible way to improve mpg

It is simple physics. It requires a certain amount of energy to move something. That amount of energy will never, ever, ever change. That is it. Given the current setup of the entire driveline, the weight, tires, and engine of the XJ, nothing you will ever do will significantly change...

    What a MORON!!

You don't know the state of tune of that 355. If it is out of any vehicle from the 70's or 80's, I kid you not, that XJ is slower than a stock 4.0. Some of those V8's in that era barely pushed 160 hp and were a joke.

    Throttle body spacers

I installed one years back and the only thing it did was to very slightly make the gas pedal more jumpy off the line. It also has been scraping the insulation on the underside of my hood since, causing a mess

    u turn steering/pitman arm questions

When you buy a box from Napa, you have no idea what car it came out of, especially if it is 3.0 turns (XJ boxes are 3.5). They just pool them all and then rebuild them. A box meant for a Jeep will have NO internal stops, so no, that would not be jerry rigging it, whereas using a pitman arm not...

    Oil pressure,high then low?Normal?

I personally think the XJ oil press. guage is so low quality that it can't be relied upon. As long as you keep your oil level topped off and use good quality oil and filter, I believe you can almost ignore oil pressure. If you are really concerned, I'd install a good quality aftermarket...
