I have seen this same problem with my 94. I think that it's because my axle seal is leaking and causing gear lube to get on the shoes. the last time it got stuck was in a snowy parking lot and I had to really play with the jeep to get it freed up. almost hit a light pole!!!

If it started in drive then the nss is shot! that should not happen as a safety. the whole point of the switch. I'd say replace that and you will be good.
