This might be stupid but how does the pcm determine engine rpm. Its not from the distributor or cam position sensor because if you unplug it while the engine is running it does not change anything.

Replaced the coil and sure enough it has a big crack in it all the way down to the bracket that it attaches to.Very possible it was leaking to ground. So far its running good! Thanks!
