    99 XJ in Central NJ

Putting out a feeler to see if my XJ is worth anything to anyone. It's a 1999 XJ, gold with gold (factory) rims. Has 172,250 miles. Only runs when dry - won't start if it's wet. Would still make a a good trail rig. Has front tow points, rear hitch, factory skids, 2" BB - spacers and AAL...

    My XJ is Possessed

The alternator was the problem - put a new one in for $100 and my XJ is back. Thanks for all the advice, it was spot on as always. If you found this post on a search - this is not a hard job. I have basic hand tools and was able to do the job in a few hours. Loosened the serpentine belt...

    My XJ is Possessed

Put a volt meter on today and found that I get a constant 12V on the battery - cold or running. It should be higher when running, correct? I may just replace the alternator. Not a hard job, rust will be the biggest obstacle.

    My XJ is Possessed

It was dark when I got home, but I found two grounds - one by the battery and one at the back of the engine bay. Both are fine. The connection under left side of the dash is good. Changing out the alternator doesn't look too hard. I'll probably do that. Rust will be my biggest hurdle.

    My XJ is Possessed

I just remembered something that might be related. When I drove home Friday, I remember thinking I could "hear" the engine through my radio's speakers. Totally forgot about that until now.

    My XJ is Possessed

My XJ is a '99. Inline 6, automatic, 8.25 rear. Suspension mods, but nothing done to the engine besides maintenance.

    My XJ is Possessed

My gauges come and go occasionally, but today (on startup) they all went out except the speedometer... which fluxuates between 20mph and pinned. Idle sounds OK, but when I step on the gas it hesitates and keeps stuttering. Undriveable, if that's a word. I'll take a closer look this evening...

    Rear driveshaft chirping - driveable?

Solid advice as always. It killed me to have the Jeep sitting in the driveway during the last snow, but now it's all greased up and no more angry sparrows.

    Rear driveshaft chirping - driveable?

Yes, angry sparrows - that is exactly what I'm hearing. Hopefully grease is all I need. Now I just need to be home at the same time the sun is out. Thanks for the advice. I'll leave it parked until I can get under it.

    Rear driveshaft chirping - driveable?

The DC joint on my rear DS is chirping. It just started, and I've only driven about 10 miles since then. Can I drive a bit before fixing, or am I risking further damage? My XJ has a home made BB of about 3" and an SYE with a custom rear DS. I was able to narrow the noise to rear DS by having...

Need to vent - service gone bad

There used to be a Jeep dealer down the road from me and their service was the best. There was one mechanic there, Ivan, who knew XJs and really took pride in his work. I'm looking for that kind service again, but I'm having a hard time finding it.

Need to vent - service gone bad

I brought my XJ in to the dealer for a steering box problem and got it back today - about two weeks later. There was lots of confusion and lost paperwork. On the drive home, I noticed it ran a little hot. I get home and pop the hood - the electric fan is gone! I don't like other people...

    Oil ?

I'm going to call today and see if they can give me a reason. IMO, it was either a mistake or a way to get me back for service sooner.

    Oil ?

My wife has a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and had the oil changed yesterday at the dealer. I checked the receipt and they put 5w30 conventional oil it. The manual recommends 0w20 synthetic and that is what has always been put in. Is running it for 3k with the 5w30 going to cause problems?

    Steering shudder at low speed

Just in case someone else has a similar problem, it turned out to be the steering gearbox.
