What? Lots of people have made solid exo-only cages. They might not be as strong as and exo-internal combo, and they might take more tube, but it's not a bad idea. A bad idea would be running no cage at all when he knows he needs one, right?
As far as pics go, check out xjdb.com Are you talking...
Ok, adding to the topic: What amount of weight loss will actually lead to improved wheeling capabilities? I mean, if I get rid of my rear seat and carpet, it's not going to keep me from breaking my dana 30
On a full bodied rig, lets say I get moderately aggresive with this jeep diet and drop my...
Every pull is from the front, right corner of the vehicle. It's also higher on the vehicle. Seems...I don't know...different. Maybe I'm having trouble adapting to the creativity :looney:
I guess it just seems like all of the pulling angles become more severe. Whether it's to the right, and the...
I figured it would be nice not to have so much sticking off the front end-- but is the fairlead mount on the front corner going to make for weird pulls? Is there a benefit to the positioning of the fairlead, or is the benefit just in clearance gained from the mounting location of the winch?
Nice job on this build, it's been fun to watch... especially after hearing you talk about not building it for so long. :laugh3:
I do have one question: What is the benefit of the winch mounting location? I re-read through this thread, and can't find any info on it. Care to explain?
Yes-- OEM gas tank skids are tough, cheap, and readily available. Designing your own tank skid would be slow and expensive. Unless you cannot use a stock piece--different tank or something-- I would check out a salvage yard before tackling this project.
This is something that I have been wondering about as well. I think pretty much all exos tie into the front bumper, rear bumper and sliders. Some cages tie into the pinch seam on the roof (where a roof rack mounts) and recently someone was talking about tieing their cage into the door hinges...
I appreciate the offer, but i'd prefer to just have the axle shafts, hopefully to minimize the clutter in my garage.
I am willing to pay someone for these, not sure if that was clear in my first post or not.
Run a search, most people doing a spring pack project have run into this problem.
Basically, cutting into the frame from the inside to get access to the bolt, or cutting into the frame from the top through a flap seem to be the most common solutions.
But definately run a search, because there...
I had good luck with the front leaf springs off an old jeep wagoneer. They were cheaper, for one, because was in an "old car" pull-n-save yard. The front axle on the wagoneer was a sprung under axle, so the leafs had good arch, and are of good length to make a nice, clean pack with the xj...
This works great! For about 5 days!
Seriously, I probably spent 5 hours prepping the leaves before spraying them with a graphite paint from John Deere. Apparently I should have spent longer, because it sure didn't last.
If I had to do it again, I wouldnt even bother with the paint. What I...
