    Locking Axles?

Applying some parking brake can change the bias. I usually pull it on moderately quick release and repeat. That little trick has saved me from needing a tug or digging many times. It even works with two wheels in the air.

    Mysterious tick

Check your distributor shaft, up and down play doesn't mean much sideways play does. My 96 did the same thing, I ignored it, and eventually, my rotor exploded. My best guess is motor harmonics (speed, load etc.) played a role in how bad or when the tick happened. I'd keep a spare rotor in the...

    99 xj cylinder 3 & 5 dead

I'm thinking the same thing, he is getting crossfire, spark jumping to the wrong wire. He might want to ohm test his cables. Really high resistance cables can cause all sorts of grief. I check spark by opening an old plug to 60 thousandths, holding it on a good ground, and looking at the spark...

    More Brake Trouble

Not full proof but can be an indicator, brake hard if the rear goes left or right it is your rear. If the front nose dives in one direction or the other it is the front. The vast majority of the time it is something in the rear. Most common is the self-adjuster on one side or the other isn't...

    Blew new caliper piston seals?

Did you replace the dust seals and the piston O ring? You need to feel the inside of the bore with your fingertip. Moisture settles in the piston bore and can cause pitting. It is possible if the dust seal gets torn that the space between the piston and the bore gets packed with mud and/or...

    Wiring harness diagrams needed

I studied various diagrams and never really got a handle on the harnesses until I stripped a set out of a wrecked Renix. I rolled the harnesses up and stored them in buckets. When trying to follow a wire on the XJ I'd lay out the extra harness on the garage floor and follow the wire there first.

Renix era ignition switch bypass relays?

The brown wire at the steering column connector is the one that usually heats up and causes issues. The yellow wire is the important one for most engine functions. Also, a good spot to put in a kill switch. Line loss due to corroded connectors is an old Renix sickness. I clean mine yearly...

    I think I have a backlash problem ...

First thing is to check and see if the carrier bearing adjuster bolt has come loose and allowed the adjuster to back off. I really can't see how the ring gear has shifted this much without a bearing failure or the adjuster coming loose. Have you tried prying the carrier left and right? That slip...

    I think I have a backlash problem ...

Last thought don't be too sure that growl is coming from the rear differential, sound travels through the frame and it can fool you. I've known some really good mechanics that have been fooled following a noise to the wrong source.

    I think I have a backlash problem ...

I'm still on the top side of the dirt. I'm an expert at very little, I know a little about a lot of things. Mostly from necessity, when I got my first XJ, there were no parts available I had to order everything out of the states, in fact even before that when the wife had her FSJ wagoneer...

    I think I have a backlash problem ...

Have you checked your wheel bearings for the noise? Push up on the hub, should be very little play, like in the thousandths. In and out play doesn't mean much. If your wheel bearings are worn it won't be long until the seal starts leaking. The only way to know for sure is to do a contact patch...
