    Go with the 8.8. It will handle the HP and is easier to drive (read takes less HP) than the 9". If you have to just get a different offset on your rims to compensate for the narrower axle.

    what'll swap into a 84xj with a 2.8 ?

    I just swapped in a 3.4L from a Camaro. You do need to re-balance the flywheel, I did mine by cutting off the extra weight and drilling holes similar to the Camaro flywheel.     Should I go ahead and get a 8.8?

    I would get an 8.8 open diff when ready to regear and put a lock rite in it. You will be able to get an 8.8 with 4.10 gears for the cost of setting up your 8.25. But it will have disc brakes, stronger axles, thicker larger tubes and more availability of parts.
