gearing for the beginner is tough. Can be done if you the do it all type. Somebody had to learn the hard way. I just dont like learning that way because it cost me $
Yes you should change that whole dist out. With gears that worn it has been either pushing hard on the cam gear or the metal in the dist gear was too soft
Check fluid level as mentioned. If major damage has occurred then just look for another rear. Because there are a ton of them for sale cheap. A lot cheaper that rebuilding yours.
Get some weight or people to load up the rear. Then measure the distance for the drive shaft. I had the same issue with using the front. the front would bottom out before it collapsed all the way. I just pulled it a cut off a 1/4" of the splined area and then it was perfect.
I use to have a lifted Cherokee that had 32 on it normally but when I need to tow with it I had a set of 235's. It just pulled better with the smaller tires. I assume due to the better gear ratio.
